You can experiment without routing.

Remove the pickup from the body and hold it on the other side of the strings. Rig up some spacers to give the correct string height, and move it around (or have someone else move it) while you play it.

You'll know how it will sound, and you'll know exactly where you'll want to put it.

It's a PITA, but beats Russian Roulette.

Thanks, that's a very interesting thread.

If you read through that thread, you will notice a whole lot of people being very happy with their three-pickup modifications (there is only one guy in that thread I can remember who was disappointed with the result). Examples:

I'm really surprised of how much I like the neck pickup, I'm using it more than I thought I would.

I was particulary interested in the difference between the middle (was "neck" in original) and the new "neck" pickup way up at the neck. The difference is subtle. But to me there seems to be a slight deepness to the "neck" tone that the middle pickup only partially gets. I know on my 3 pickup Modulus I do prefer the bridge-neck combo over the bridge-middle combo even though the differences are subtle.

Haven't had her long, still getting used to her but loving her sound and resonance.

You are right and the tone differences are more pronounced in real life vs the recording. My favorite position is to use the two far outer coils. It gives a jazz tone but a little bit deeper.

It's pretty unreal how versatile it is. The 2 knobs are master volume and tone. The 3 switches control the pickups. The single coil pickups are on off switches and the neck pickup is humbucking-off-single. There are a whole lot of tones you can get from it just from the pickup combos. From a gritty pickin Rick tone to music man to fender jazz or thumb-ish tones with the bridge pickup being so tucked away near the bridge. It's not your modern bass but pulls off all the classic tones and seems like it would cut through anything you played.
