Muff pedals for bass?

I personally own the Tall Font Russian from W&C and it's amazing. I've wanted to try the SUF Civil War for a while because I've heard it has even more low end.

There will surely be a lot of great suggestions in this thread. Grey Stache, TAFM, etc. All are awesome, just gotta try them out until you find one that's suits your personal style and sits well in the mix.

I disagree about the mid control being a necessity. Maybe good in some circumstances, not a requirement.

Had a Bass Big Muff Deluxe and it definitely got the job done, and had a decent sound, however I ended up with a Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian and I am very happy with it. If money is no object, I'd look at the COG Grand Tarkin and/or Colorsound Tonebender Fuzz. If you want simple, go for the Colorsound. If you want flexibility and something with more robust features, get the Tarkin. I'm just waiting for the British pound to go down some more before pulling the trigger on the Tarkin ;)

Well I keep reading the best Muff model is the "DIY", but I can't find that one on the EHX website — or any other pedal brand that puts out the "DIY" Muff – instead, when I Internet-search for the "DIY" Muff, I get a bunch of gibberish about how I'd have to assemble the Muff circuitous myself out of BFCs, iodes, portend-barometers and decapitators. I don't wanna mess with no toxic Bio-Flourcarboniums...

I think Kit Rae is required reading, whether you do it yourself or not, you need to do your homework: there is a lot of good info about the many different Muffs and the clones thereof ... ignore the electrical runes and focus on the English descriptions:

But what do I know, I've never even played through a muff, at least not that I can recall...

First off all, thanks you all for the replies! Did not really think I would get this much attention.

I'm on my phone right know so can't watch all the youtube links at the moment.
I'm not living in the US, but in Norway so little chance ofof trying alot of pedals (got one music shop where I live).

I'm a little busy for the moment but will look at all the comments when I get my hands at a computer again.

So please calm down alittle in the meanwhile ;)

I've been very far Dow the Big Muff rabbit hole, and the EQD Cloven Hoof has stuck around the longest. I've owned Green Sovteks, Black Sovteks, USA NYC reissues, the regular hoof, the Blackout musket, the BAT Pharaoh, way huge swollen pickle, and others that I'm probably forgetting. The Cloven hoof can cop the smooth/scooped green Russian sound very well, but can also get much nastier and has the mid shift which is invaluable when slugging it out with distorted half stacks. The Musket is also very worthy as well. I really like the pharaoh into a pushed tube amp or stacked with an OD, but it's a little lacking into a clean amp in my opinion. Great pedal nonetheless and I'll own another someday.

I chose the EHX DBBMP, and I like it but I am not blown away by its ferocity. Frankly, I don't even know the difference between "muff" and "fuzz". I mostly got it because of the extra features over the BBMP (Gate, HPF/LPF, DI Out, Input Level, etc).

My two suggestions - Swollen Pickle and Pharaoh Supreme.

The Swollen Pickle is incredibly versatile and can be set to do just about any flavor of muff, if you're willing to tweak it to your rig. It's also relatively cheap used, about $80 plus shipping. A great muff that could end your search before getting into boutique territory.

The Pharaoh Supreme is by far my favorite fuzz. (Pickle is second). It is the most versatile fuzz I've ever seen, even moreso than the Pickle. Depending on how much you want to tweak, this can be good or bad. I love tweaking, and it pays off in this pedal. It has plenty of clipping options to vary the tone, as well as all sorts of tweaks to a standard muff. It's a bit pricey, but worth it. Hard to find used.

Added bonus if you play guitar - both pedals also rip on the skinny strings!

Also, bringing up muffs here is guaranteed to get plenty of responses! You must be new around these parts, so welcome to TB!

Hi!

I'm looking for a pedal to dirt up my bass sound and concider buying a big muff. The only new production pedal I can find is the EHX bass big muff pi that is suiteble for bass (don't want something that kills the low-end).

Do you guy's know about other bass muff pedals on the marked? I like to look around a bit before buying new gear when I usually can't try it before buying. I would also like a blend controll on the pedal when my amp can be a little picky sometimes with pedals and need some tweaking to make them sound perfect.

Thanks!

Hello. Albeit I am not a muff specialist (alright, alright...), and although I'm for Fuzzrocious in most things fuzzy, I happen not to own a Grey Stache (or even played one yet, I think). I cannot recommend any fuzz pedals with a blend, since I'm not into it.

My recent revisiting of the Big Muff genre led me to two pedals by Wren and Cuff: 1. The Box of War, and 2. the Caprid.

The Box of War was a natural for bass guitar; tough, dry, and with lots of low end available. If you like the "Civil War" Big Muff sound, you could do worse than this pedal.

But as it turned out, it was my distant memories of the original "ram's head" Big Muffs that motivated me. That spongy, lush midrange-y texture. And the Caprid nailed that sound. What a ****ing great pedal for bass guitar. Sheesh. If you like that sort of thing, that is. :D

Lastly I can recommend highly the Frantone Lo-Tone Classic Fuzz. It's hard to find old ones; but Fran is back in business, so she may make them again, maybe even to order.

i like a little variety and flexibility ... versus a 1 trick pony

i have a Dr Scientist ' the elements ' ... variable gain , 3 clip modes , 3 band eq , filters for mids/lows ...

and a output jack so you can use a volume pedal to control the MIX knob live - on the fly ..!! Cool Stuff ..
