That's not the kind of bass I'd buy for myself, but that isn't stopping from drooling over it!

EDIT: My basses are all bursts, so the color isn't exactly me (although, never say never). But that neck ... yowza! Yeah, I could do something like that!

I sold my 2010 Classic 5 a year ago....wish I had not, but it was just to heavy for me

Thats why I got rid of my Bacchus 5er, I loved the bass but the day after I played a show with it my hip and back would be killing me. If I ever really need it Ill just convert a 4 string to BEAD.

This is the longest I've held onto a Stingray. For fun, I went back to the Music Man serial number database and put the number in again. Now it says 2001 instead of 1991. Perhaps I put the number in wrong when I first got it.

Back in the club again with this "almost like new, barely played" 1991 Stingray, 2 Band, Trans Teal, 9.5 lb.
It plays and sounds as good as it looks.

1991 would have laquered neck and bridge with mutes. So 2001 sounds right.

Thank you. That's exactly what I thought, especially after looking up pictures of 91's.
I'm still so happy with this Stingray. My favorite, and I've been through quite a few trying to find the right one for me. It's also the loudest one acoustically.

posting again, because, well, these are so much fun to play and sound so good! My first "workhorse" bass was an 81 L-1000 and I played it at hundreds of gigs over 9 years. I sold it (bad move) and have had many other basses, including other wunkays. These however remind me of that bass in many GREAT ways! Keepers for sure! The 79 is immaculate, but will be a player for sure (when gigs start happening again)!!

I'm thinking of joining the Club. I may be doing it as a double header. Can anybody tell me if Stingray necks are swappable if they're both 6-bolts? I'm considering buying a fretless and a fretted and swapping the necks. Surely shimming is something that needs to happen. Does anybody know of any reason why this might be a bad idea?

1.) I think all current Stingray necks are 6 bolt, but I could be wrong.
2.) Are you going to buy two instruments, one fretted and one fretless?
Or one instrument and two necks?
I think it's very hard to get single replacement parts from Ernie Ball.

1. I believe the "Specials" are now a 5-bolter for access to the 22nd fret.
2. Two instruments. I found a fretless I didn't like the neck with the body, but would look good if I swapped with a second bass I've had my eye on, thereby putting the fretless neck on the formerly fretted bass and vice versa.

That is correct about the Specials being 5-bolts. If the 2 that you have your eye on are from similar eras and both 6 bolt, I would imagine it should be fine. Do you know the production year of the 2 basses?

Yeah, 1998 and 2008. A ten-year spread, but the designs I imagine would be the same, minus little things like that new fancy nut on the new one.

Well, one has been officially purchased, the 2008, so I'm official now. A white SR5 from 1990 was my first bass, and it feels good to come home, again.

I don't know enough about how things have changed but I did see someone post this link before which goes over the details of how the bridge has changed through the years.

No problem. The most relevant thing that I found is that they used the same style neckplate from 1998-2016 so you might be fine. Does the 1998 serial start with E?
