(Stingray sounds better to me actually) So I was curious if both the Stingray Classic and Sterling Classic have the same exact electronics. The Stingray Classic that I played at GC sounded awesome, but I really prefer the smaller neck on the Sterling. If it sounds the same as the Stingray, I'd go that way most likely.

I'm a believer that the weight in this case has something to do with the tone of the Stingrays. Heavier being better within reason. I'm certain that this can be debated though.

You might want to check in at the EBMM board. I've never played a Sterling so I am far from an expert as anyone.

I am pretty sure the only difference in electronics between a ray and a Sterling are;
A-pickup switch, it can do parallel, series or single coil.
B-pickup magnet. I always get this backwards, but here goes. IIRC, the Sterling and SR5 were alnico pickups and the regular SR is ceramic. I think they are all the same magnets now.
I know they have changed back and forth couple times on pickup magnets. The preamp, if 3 band, is the same regardless. The 2 band I believe as well is the same on either for the classics. I dont think they would dream up a brand new 2 band pre just for the sterling.
Yeah, the body size does make a slight difference in tone. I have a SR5 fretless and a sterling so its kind of hard to compare. As has been said before, you can have a lot of variation in tone just because one bass has an alder body and another has ash. Or one bass has SS strings and the next one has nickels.

CG, it appears that the new Classics eliminated the pickup switch.

When I walked into my local GC here to check out their bass offerings, it stood out like a shining star on the wall next to all the other basses. Took me all of 10 seconds to decide I wanted it just for the looks alone, before I even heard it.

I started laughing when I read that because I did the same exact thing! It was hanging up and it was just glowing. Everything else looked and played horribly next to it. I'm pretty sure I decided in about 10 seconds as well haha!

In the case of the Classic Sterling there is no switch, but the bass still has ceramic magnets and will be wired in series. So it will naturally be more prominent in the midrange over a StingRay.
But so far Classic Sterlings haven't begun shipping yet, the SR5's are just barely getting out, so Sterlings are sure to follow shortly.

The Perfect Bass has had the Classic Sterlings for a while now.

How does the TC hold up to the mogami platinum? I tried one of those cables out w/ a stingray @ work and the amp I tried it on was just begging for mercy. I'm afraid to use one of the platinum cables w/ my stingray...soooo much "juicy juice" as JimmyM puts it :)

The RH450 seems to handle it pretty well. The RH450 is designed with both active and passive basses in mind. I keep the input gain at about 50%, and the only thing that lights the clip indicator is if I really hit the B string hard.

Exactly my situation as well! lol

I saw mine when I was buying a set of strings for a non-musical friend who needed a set for a guitar she borrowed to learn on. Just for kicks I took a spin through the bass room expecting to be completely underwhelmed as usual. But I was struck dumb when I saw my baby on the wall... so dumb, in fact, that I actually LEFT THE BUILDING, telling myself "I *can't* buy another one so soon!" (had just gotten my Stambaugh 2 months previously)

Her gravity pulled me in though... I went back on Monday and bought her, even managed to catch the end of the President's Day sale and saved $250. :D

Here's mine: White on natural. Don't see to many with that combination around (I see more natural/black). It's an '02. I found it used in '03. Not a mark on it. I traded a beat up old Ibanez + $750 for it. I love this thing. I've been GASsing for others, but I just can't bring myself to let this go.

It is extremely unique. I don't recall ever seeing a natural finish on an SR5. I'm not a fan of natural basses but this one is killer in my book.

I'm with you...this one is a keeper. DO NOT let this one go. And a +1 for a guy from my Dad's hometown.

+1, don't EVER get rid of that one! Like you said, you don't see many like that around! I don't think I EVER have. I wonder what a white pearl pickguard would look like on there... ? :)
