They are not a special edition in the sense of the limited run anniversary editions. They are a custom colour combination that is exclusive to Guitar Center. I've no idea how many were made in this colour combination. I also don't know if it is a limited run, or if they continue to make new units for GC. Based on the serial number of my unit, it appears to have been made middle of 2008, but I purchased it new in early 2010.
When I walked into my local GC here to check out their bass offerings, it stood out like a shining star on the wall next to all the other basses. Took me all of 10 seconds to decide I wanted it just for the looks alone, before I even heard it.

When I picked up mine, I was on the phone with an Ernie Ball rep (wanted pearl white) who told me that gold hardware wasn't an available option... When I told him I was looking at one 10 feet away that in fact HAD gold hardware, he informed me that it was a limited run for Guitar Center. These blue/gold ones we've been seeing have to be a special run of some sort. Just a theory though. lol

IIRC the blue/gold are for the GC anniversery. As far as teh plate saying its older, they do just pull the plates from a bin, so there is a little slop on the numbers. My guess is that sending them out to get gold plated pushed that date back a bit.
Personally I think that color combo is teh uggs. But then a lot of folks think the same of the 5 string PG and I like it a lot.

That is the most badassed trans orange bass I've seen. The maple fret board an black pickguard compliment it perfectly.
Hi EagleMoon, I will take a shot at it.
The Sterling Classic is setup pretty much the same as the SR Classic with the same EQ and pickup. The neck will be more slender than the SR so the string spacing at the nut would be a bit closer. The half moon control plate is not used on the Sterling and the pickguard is shaped slightly different. Also from the EBMM site, the Sterling is spec'd lighter in weight so, I'm guessing here, the body might be a bit smaller. The Sterling also has the mute bridge which I love.

I've owned a 3-band regular Sterling before, and I know the electronics are different generally in a Sterling compared to a Stingray. (Stingray sounds better to me actually) So I was curious if both the Stingray Classic and Sterling Classic have the same exact electronics. The Stingray Classic that I played at GC sounded awesome, but I really prefer the smaller neck on the Sterling. If it sounds the same as the Stingray, I'd go that way most likely.
