just got my new SR5 in today from the big brown truck and I must say, it was worth it. i have never played a neck on a bass that plays that good.

It's a good thing though, because it makes your SR4 stand out as being especially amazing looking.
Let's just suffice to say that the bass I had at his age wasn't *quite* the caliber of his... (jealous)

Hey, I purchased this off someone on craigslist in the philadelphia area. It was listed as blueburst. I took the neck off, the body is stamped BLUBRST and febuary 3rd 1988 (amazing, considering I bought it in febuary 2008). The finish is unlike any I've been able to locate on the internet. Has anyone seen this finish before? Whats the deal?? It has a lot of green hues in it, almost to the extreme. The neck is real thin compared to my 1998 musicman and my friend austin's 30 year anniversary. I've checked pages and pages worth of forums looking for musicman's with the same coloring. The pickguard is CLEAR, but in these photo's the pickguard was removed. When the guard is on, the finish is even, when removed the area where the pickguard would be is significantly lighter

Yeah, its not though. See how his bass (which is even called blue burst) goes from darker blue to black? Mine goes from green to blue.
Blueburst it is... It's been discontinued a couple of years ago, I believe somewhere in the 90s, but I'm no expert on that. I think the greenish fade has just to do with the aging of the instrument and the finish... Maybe the bass has spent some good times in smokey places...
As for the neck: there has been a period when narrow necked 'jazz nut width' necks were an option for the Sabre and the 'Ray. I doubt it was still available as an option in 1988... I'm no expert on this.
As for the PG: there have been reports of stock clear PG's, but most of the examples were basses with a red finish...
I would say: check the EBMM forum... A hell of a lot knowledge over there, as well as the company's CEO...!
Sweet, thanks for the input. When I said that the neck was thin I should have been more clear though, I was refering to thickness as in thumb to fingers while playing.... not from low string to high.. by bad. On my 1998 MM the neck is super chunky maple. Austin (that dude with the long hair) has a 30 year anniversary and we put all 3 together in a room to check out the differences, and one major one is how chunky the necks are. my 1998 is really thick and takes the cake, with his anniversary in the middle and my blueburst being the thin one. It's noticable switching back and forth between my two, maybe a good 3 or 4 millimeters thinner but I'm no expert.
I am pretty excited about my latest addition.... a 100th Anniversary Namm Stingray. 
My wife funded this as my 40th birthday next week.
I am really lucky to a) have found one of the 100 NAMM SR's available at a reasonable price and 100% mint and b) to be able to (BARELY) afford to still keep both my 30th Anni SR and 20th Anni SR5.
I will post a family portrait later, but here is my 100th (crappy pics from original owner) and the other 2.....
