Played one. Quick review.
Right off the bat, I do;t like basses that are based on guitars. There's something insincere about it. But here goes.
Appearance: I love the look, my style is retro modern and this bass screams it! But I wonder how it will stand up over time? Remember when the Steinberger was considered cool looking? (Those of you over 40). Or the Kubuki or whatever that stupid bass used by St Hamm. Still, I'd have no problem taking this baby out. It's pretty bad ass -- for now.
Feel: Feels like a MM. I prefer the Sterling neck to the stingray. I also don't like the bare maple fretboard. But to me, MM are as playable as any high end bass.
Sound: Sounds like a MM but with many more tonal options. ANd there's the rub...there are almost TOO many options! And since a MM may very well be the most versatile bass on the market in terms of being able to have different sounds and blend with any type of music, these additional features seem like too many bells and whistles.
The verdict: No doubt, it's a freakishly awesome bass. It's as close to a "does it all" instrument as you'll ever find. Though MM can be inconsistent. Some are dogs. But a good one feels amazing. Did it sing out to me that it must be owned? No. But to anyone considering a top of the line MM and has an extra , oh, $700 or so, I'd suggest definitely considering it.
And if you still can't get the tone you like, you probably won't find it anywhere.
