MXR bass innovations

Its small, its affordable, and full featured. Do you know of anything else at that size and price with its features?

well...not exactly the same but the tone hammer pedal comes very close, but is bigger, which is why i asked if size is the innovation (keep off the ags circut and its a great clean tone). also, the para driver in clean mode without the tube emulation is pretty clean and modern with sweepable mids, and the radial pz pre. even though its marketed toward piezo pickups, its an excellent preamp for bass, and small, with a di and sweepable mids and high pass filter. and i believe that the vt bass DI now has a blend knob so you can use it as a 3 band preamp without the baked in tube emulation (not sweepable mids). ill probably get the mxr because i seem to have a thing for collecting preamps, and im sure it has its own signature tone just like the others do.

Good read. I wonder how it compares to the M80 if both are run flat?

I've asked on FB if the new MXR M81 Bass Preamp was going to be the same as the M80, but haven't received a reply yet - I think they're waiting to release more details at the NAMM show.

The MXR M80 is ~
Bass +-18 dB @ 60 Hz, shelving
Mid +-10 dB @ 850 Hz
Treble +-12 dB @ 4 kHz, shelving

I'm really looking forward to getting the new M81 - its going to replace my BDDI.

Cant wait for these to come out! I was wondering though. When used only as a DI i see there is a button for pre/post eq. Does this mean that if you put this on post eq, then click the pedal switch off it will just function as a DI (pre eq) or is it just the pre/post button that will do this?

Yeah im not expecting it to get too dirty either - isnt that the point of a seperate input volume though? Do you think the DI will be pre eq if you turn the footswitch off or is it just the pre/post button that will do that? This will be the deal breaker for me as I have a passive bass and need DI with 'active sound' capability.

I would venture to guess/assume that the signal goes through the DI regardless, with the pre/post switch there for when the preamp function is engaged.

I'm not surprised if the input isn't for overdriving a FET or something like that for dirt. Probably more for boosting a passive bass or reducing a hot active bass before hitting the EQ, sort of like their 10-band graphic EQ pedal.
