My nephew makes bad music

This reminds me of the story Paul McCartney tells about writing "She Loves You." He and John work out the song in Macca's kitchen while his dad is sitting in the parlor. When they're finished, dad says "that's a lovely tune, boys, but shouldn't it be 'she loves you, yes, yes, yes?'"

I had something similar happen with my friend once, who is very talented guitarist and bassist. He started doing this "trap" autotuned crap with his brother that gave us a good laugh. I would honestly speak to the kid, but I am afraid that modern pop music is like that, so he might be doing it "just right".

I would avoid telling his parents. Once out, you can't take it back. Why cause a pissing contest? With maturity he will see the errors he makes, but it could take a while. Be patient. Maybe speak with him privately if you think you can help him.

Uhhh...how old is he? Almost 20? If indeed he is an an alcoholic, it's showing. What are the personality/physical issues? Which were the "offensive" tunes, so I could focus on them(offensive being relative and all)?
That first one, nice "1999" nick. It all sounds like what is called 'outsider music'; the concept has been around for decades. There's a whole cult following for that kind of stuff, I've heard weirder, and there used to be a radio show in the states, 'Dr.Demento', that would showcase a certain amount of it(I gather that you're in the UK). I dunno, I didn't realize there was a demand for the next Joe Cocker.

Update...I delved into more of it, and I gotta say, I'm digging it, but then, I'm a Residents, Jandek, Daniel Johnston, Gary Wilson, and Shaggs fan. He would have been a hit in the DIY early 80's.

Your opinion of the musicality (no guitars? welcome to the 21st century) of his output is immaterial. And if this is how he exorcises his demons, well, artistic expression is among the best options for that. However, maybe, like a personal journal (also a good option), his music would be better tucked away than exposed to the world.

If you are personally pained by its content then I recommend you address your nephew directly and respectfully about it. I want to believe he would take the words of his uncle to heart.

Don't get me wrong, I love my nephew more than the world. I was elated when he told me he was going to pick up a guitar and start recording some music. He recently put out some recordings on Bandcamp. It's intentionally bad, or something. There's barely even any guitar parts. It's just a big disappointment for me. I wanted him to be the next Joe Cocker, I think he has that potential.

WHat he did put together is not even guitar based and frankly the material is rude and offensive. I have a mind to tell his parents about these recordings, as he told me he's kept it secret from them. the music reveals personal relationship information about both his parents and himself. They wouldn't be happy to learn about their love lives and family secrets being put out in the open like that.

What should I do? Should I tell my brother?

Bad music will be it's own rewards.

My guess is he's discovered that guitar is hard, and EDM production is much easier to pull off.

Maybe you could write a song and upload it to Bandcamp, revealing details of his life that he would rather keep private, use a pseudonym and make him listen.
