My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

I don't mind legwork at all, especially when a great result is on the back end. Looks like they've got a pre-built BOM at Mouser, to that takes a LOT of the hassle out. I'm good with a wiring diagram and not much more.

I'll definitely have to look into this later this winter. I've got an amp to finish building first (Ceriatone 2202 HW) and a Hairball 1176 (500 series compressor) to finish building before I'm allowed to purchase parts for any additional soldering-based projects.

I've been eyeballing the Mic-Parts ELAM251 clone, but I'm not sure I want to drop a grand on a mic kit. Bet it sounds phenomenal, though.

You would think, but having used that BOM I can tell you that it doesn’t really work all that well. Some parts at Mouser have slightly changed designations so you have to make sure that the parts that don’t work on the BOM can be sourced accurately using parts with different designations. Additionally, there are items in the plans that get changed based on forum discussions, but (at least when I built mine) have not been updated. Maybe he’s updated the plans since all of those discussions and it would be easier, but suffice it to say, things were very confusing. Not impossible, just plan on it being a bumpy ride up front.

Yeah, anything I've ever built that's been sourced from a Mouser BOM like that has had a *significant* amount of double and triple checking for those very reasons you noted. As well as "oh crap" moments where I realize I ordered the wrong value resistors, etc. There's a reason "kit" companies like Hairball, Mic-Parts, CAPI, etc., all do a considerable amount of business. They make excellent products and their kits take all the hassle out of it.

The Deluxe Reverb I mentioned was entirely "scratch sourced" like that. The same with the Marshall 18-watter I built. It took months to source those parts, and in a couple cases, purchasing incorrect parts before purchasing the correct ones. I've got spreadsheets now of all the needed parts and vendor part numbers (which are no doubt outdated at this point).

A lot like the trials and delays you went through here--it really puts the brakes on the "I wanna build something!" desire. Which is why I tend to have a couple projects in flight, so I can be working on one while I provide lead time for the next one.......

Been slow at work since I returned from paternity leave on Monday - this thread has been a very nice distraction while I'm getting used to leaving wife and baby at home. But by god, I really need to step up my construction skills. I installed a couple Wifi-controlled dimmers in my kitchen and gave up on the face plate entirely since I couldn't get it to fit again! Good thing the switches are hidden behind a giant cabinet.

silky smoove ...i'm not going to go back and "like" all of the posts you and others made while you endeavored to complete your studio project...so please know that many TB folks, including myself, have enjoyed the 'journey' whether we chimed-in or not.

having built a working studio myself = it's mind-numbing but gratifying in ways others couldn't understand without the actual experience. so, thanks for sharing all that you have shared, and best wishes going forward! :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Got the color proof back for my new logo to replace the old one which I hate. Out with the old, in with the new!

I don't mind the old one, to be honest. I would not have wanted to cut that vinyl tho! That's some seriously thin letters! I have a cutter and we do our own decals for the racecar. I try to avoid thin stuff like that!

P.S. - If I recall correctly, I think you said you could not make it to the meetup tomorrow, right?

The old one just looks super dated to me. I think it was trendy and hip when I came up with it back in 2014 (thereabouts), but it was at the very end of that trend so by the time I installed it the thing was already dated. Not that I’m all about staying up with current trends, but it also doesn’t really look like “me” and what I like to do in the studio. Too serious, too corporate. The new logo is a lot more fun.

I’m 50/50 on making it tomorrow. I have a vocal session beforehand and a drum session afterwards, so it will all depend on how the scheduling works out.

OK, the combined "A" and "R" letters look a little bit dated and the rest is pretty corporate, I'll agree with that. But why keep us waiting? Show us what fun new logo you have come up with. We can't wait!

I say it as three distinct words, but have always thought it looked cooler written as two. If people say “a rogue story” or “arogue story” or evening just “rogue story” I’m fine with it as long as they pay their bill :p

That was a happy accident. The word ‘productions’ is centered between the g and the y above, and the d just happened to align with the vertical portion of the triangle, which happens to be centered in the gap between rogue and story.

I’m sure some people will prefer the old one. That’s fine. It happens every time someone changes logos. A while back when Spencer changed the 3Leaf Audio logo it was met with mixed reactions. Same with the Seahawks here in Seattle. I’m clearly putting myself in good company :smug:
