My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

Is that a warm 87? Thinking about it.
Nope, it’s a clone built accurately to vintage specifications using a Vintage Microphone Kit PCB, a carefully selected capsule and transformer, period correct Styroflex caps, etc.
Someone asked me about these mics on Instagram, so I went back to the build list and tracked down the parts used:
  • SYT-5 body
  • Microphone-Parts RK-87 capsule
  • AMI Tab Funkenwerk T13 transformer
  • Vintage Microphone PCB Kit D-87
  • Assorted electrical components from Mouser, the only tricky ones being the specific Styroflex caps needed
I had to add a standoff to get the capsules centered in the headbasket, which is slightly larger on the SYT-5 body compared to an actual Neumann.
 
I didn’t know that! Too funny. Given the pains I had with the QA/QC with their Alpha panels, the back and forth battle and their eventual refund of 30%, I’m surprised they want anything to do with me :p

I’m in the process of doing my project studio with GIK panels. Haven’t placed the order yet. Selecting fabrics and wood faces this weekend. Would you recommend against them based on your experience?

If you’re going with their Alpha series panels I’d suggest looking through this gargantuan thread for my photos. I can only speak from my own singular experience and one thread on gearslutz describing the same thing, but to that end I find their QA/QC very lacking. I’m happy with the sonic characteristics of what I installed (Alpha CTs in the corners, Alpha 4” panels in the field and on the ceiling) but they are all cut poorly, needed to have corner screws relocated due to bad placement that lead to cracked/chipped/broken corners, and I had to add an additional screw to the midpoint of each long side to keep the wood veneer from sagging in the middle.

They look great at a glance and they make the room sound nice. On closer inspection the holes are misshapen, there’s lots of chattering from using dull bits and incorrect tool speeds, and the tops of some of the CTs are cracked which appears to be from being dropped or having excess weight stacked on top of them. They were meticulously well packed so GIK’s assurance that these were shipping damages rather than manufacturing problems is suspect. The fact that they were trying to tell me that screws were placed too close to the corners and that holes were cut poorly was shipping damage related still makes me laugh. Ultimately I accepted a partial refund because packing up and returning such a massive order was going to be a HUGE effort. I requested a refund equal to three times the original shipping cost (i.e. for an exchange they’d need to consider that they had shipped me bad panels, they’d have to pay have them shipped back to the factory and then they’d have to pay to ship a new batch out to me). This seemed fair to me logistically but they would only do a portion of that amount. I was tired of arguing despite having all of the facts and just took their offer.

I’ll summarize by saying that they will never get my business in the future, I think their QA/QC leaves a lot to be desired, and their customer service is lacking. I’ll also add that my studio looks and sounds great, so it’s not all bad. Take from that what you will.

I appreciate that response. My design has 11 alpha panels in it. Everything else is fabric. I guess I missed that thread on gear slut-shaming while doing my due diligence. People seemed generally pleased with them.

I don’t want to build my own panels, I want my room to sound and look good. If you were gonna do it again, where would you be looking.

To be honest your room does look good in the pics.
 
I finally got around to doing a proper loopback test with my MOTU 16A and my current computer. Here were the results at each sample rate:

I accidentally cut off the bottom of the screenshot. Suffice it to say, 45 samples at 192khz equates to 0.23ms. Even the lowest sample rate tested (44.1khz) had small enough latency to be multiple times lower than the smallest amount perceivable by humans.
 
It’s been a while since I posted anything construction-related, so...

My original shelving solution worked fine for the amount of gear I had at the time. As the studio has grown, so has the amount of gear being stored in the vestibule. Here’s a rough idea of how much stuff lives out there, and these photos don’t really do it justice.

I now need to reinforce the shelves to deal with the added weight. Even though I used good quality 1/2” Baltic birch plywood for the shelves all of the added mics, snare drums, boxes, cases, etc. are now too much.

When I built the dividing wall between the vestibule and the main room I didn’t get it perfectly square. As a result my shelf reinforcement had to be adjustable, so I grabbed 32 STC brackets that will sandwich the 1x3 furring strips supports with a #10 machine screw and nut. The brackets are screwed to the original shelf supports along the walls. This allows a little fine tuning after placing each one and leaves it rock solid once set. I added another Command Tab on the front to keep the shelf from inadvertently sliding when gear is taken off.

All done! Everything is nice and stout with no plywood flex.

I opted to flip sides for everything. For long time thread watchers you may recall that a miscalculation on my part lead to the sound door having to be mounted the opposite direction that I wanted. As such the door swings into the vestibule, which is not ideal. Originally I put all of my mics, stands, DIs, etc. on the side that the door opens towards. This was done because moving these types of items in and out of the vestibule is more common than what’s on the other side, which is effectively a big drum rack. Well, after some experience it became apparent that even though drums move in and out less frequently, when they do it’s a big pain in the butt. Step into the vestibule and out of the way of the door, close the door, pull the bass drum off the shelf, back up beyond the door, set the bass drum down, awkwardly reach over it and open an extremely heavy sound door, pick up the bass drum and take it into the main room. Yuck. The new layout allows drums to move freely in and out of the vestibule. I have to step around the door to grab mics, mic stands, DI boxes, headphone amps, etc. but all of those things are easily handled and negotiating the door is not big deal. I think this will work better all around.

How's this for overkill? I really like a Pultec EQ near the tail end of my 2buss chain to give wide Q boosts at 100hz and 10khz. I've been using the Waves PuigTec EQP1A in stereo mode for this task since it was cheap, sounds good and... well... what more do you need? It's a model of Jack Joseph Puig's favorite Pultec (evidently he has several). Softube, a company that I absolutely love, put their Tube-Tech EQ up on their end of year sale for $99 USD. Tube-Tech is a Danish clone of the original Pultec. This is the inherent risk in offering demos of plugins. I did a shootout using identical settings on each and what I've learned is that the Waves is a little dirtier and grainier overall with a more pleasant sound down low likely due to the increased harmonic saturation it offers. The Softube is noticeably cleaner, thinner down low at the same levels of boost but has a much more pleasantly extended upper frequency response. I liked some aspects of a mix with each unit on the 2buss separately and for completely independent reasons.

Now, let's be 100% honest; Either of these plugins could be used to great results, and needing to use one versus the other is entirely down to extremely small mix nuances and preferences of the mix engineer. Neither is a night and day change for a mix. Now let's continue this trend of being 100% honest and realize just how completely overkill it was for me to purchase the Softube plugins, add additional DSP demands on my computer during a mix all for the sake of using the Waves plugin for the bottom end with no top end processing happening, and then using the Softube plugin for the top end with no bottom end processing happening. I suppose sometimes overkill is just the thing to satisfy your mixing needs, errrrr rather "needs" with a heavy emphasis on the air quotes :smug:

I should mention that I'm a big fan of doing the 90s faux-midrange compressor thing of running an aux send from the lead vocal into a buss with a Pultec (cut lots of 100hz, boost lots of 8khz, all with a wide Q) into an LA-2A (absolutely smash the vocal down with 20+dB of gain reduction) and then into a second Pultec (boost the 100hz that you previously cut, cut some of the 8khz you previously boosted, still with a wide Q), and then automating the send to only unmute itself when the vocal starts to get buried in a busy mix. For that task the dirty grainy quality of the PuigTec makes is absolutely ideal for this task, whereas the Tube-Tech kind of misses the point and feels like the wrong tool for the job. Going back to my previous concept of being 100% honest; Don't let me fool myself into thinking that this process couldn't be done very well with just the Tube-Tech :p

Anyway, fun holiday sale musings on money spent that most definitely wasn't needed, but sure is fun. Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season! :thumbsup:
 
I picked up a TC Electronic Clarity M desktop meter. Mostly I wanted it for a way to see the integrated LUFS value of material at a glance without needing to pull up a meter in the box. It has lots of other cool features as well, but I’m simpleton and bought it for one basic feature :smug:

My intention was to connect it via an optical cable to my MOTU 16A. It can run over USB through the computer but has to be instantiated in a DAW as a plug-in. I wanted to check all audio across my system rather than just what’s in the DAW, so going optical from my 16A made the most sense. My 16A has two ADAT outputs. ADAT A’s out is being used for my Audient Nero monitor controller. I hooked up the Clarity to ADAT B’s output and then learned (confirmed by MOTU tech support) that only ADAT A can be toggled between ADAT (up to 8 channels depending on the sample rate) and TOSLink (always 2 channels). Both the Nero and the Clarity require TOSLink either via ADAT configured as TOSLink, or via spdif. The 16A doesn’t have spdif and only one ADAT out can be configured as TOSLink. I’m sure you can understand my dilemma.

I’m now going to go through the following tests or I’ll return the Clarity M:
  1. No cost option: Connect the Nero to the 16A’s analog outputs as opposed to digitally. I did this initially when I got the Nero and thought the digital sounded better. This could have been a function of the analog output being too hot, in which case adjusting the trim of those outputs should solve it. If not I won’t sacrifice sound quality to free up an ADAT port to add a desktop meter.
  2. Low cost option 1: Use a 1-in 2-out optical splitter to mult the TOSLink output from ADAT A to two destinations. In theory, since it’s digital, the result should be identical at each destination (Nero and Clarity). I’m skeptical that a device I can get for ~$14 USD shipped to me by tomorrow on Amazon will actually deliver on this promise. I’d be happy to be proven wrong.
  3. Low cost option 2: Use an AV style in-line ADC connected to the 16A’s analog outputs like Warren Henry described on YouTube (). I’m waiting for a response from MOTU support on the right way to connect this to the 16A (i.e. 1/4” TRS to RCA pair via one analog out, or 1/4” TS pair to RCA pair via two analog outs). I think it’s the latter, but the manual suggests always using TRS at each analog output. I’m unfamiliar with using RCA pairs, so hopefully MOTU has a suggestion.
  4. High cost option: Expand my system via AVB with a device that has an ADAT out that’s configurable as TOSLink. The cheapest MOTU option for this is the 8D, which costs about $100 more than the meter I’m trying to connect. That’s not feasible and another option where I’ll just return the meter if that’s the only path forward.
 
Well that was fast...

I just hooked up the 16A to the Nero using the 16A's analog outputs and left the TOSLink connected as well so that I could do a quick A/B comparison. The differences in sound quality were definitely down to a level imbalance between the digital and the analog. If I trim the analog outputs from the 16A's device page by -6 it sounds indistinguishable from the digital. Problem solved. I'll use the 16A's analog outputs for the Nero and then ADAT A configured as TOSLink for the Clarity M.

Basically, OP needs the fancy meter to make sure his tracks are ultra slamming mega limited super loud maximum LUFs minimal dynamics.

Also, I think I need to start a band called Maximum LUFs.
This is accurate. All my mixes need to be -4 integrated LUFS or louder. If I'm doing an intimate jazz trio I'm going to make them slam like an early Katy Perry record, or Metallica's Death Magnetic release.
 
My Slate VSX headphone system arrived today and I've been putting it through its paces. A few folks have asked me about them since mentioning them that I had a pair en route in two separate threads. I'm dropping my review here as opposed to directly in those threads. Let me preface this by saying that historically I've not been a fan of Steven Slate's products. I found VCC to be overrated and overhyped. The mix rack thing they use for their plugins annoys me in terms of functionality. I find his advertising and marketing to be really gimmicky and not as funny as he thinks it is. I also had a bad experience where Slate Digital customer service really got under my skin when they switched to the subscription model and I was trying to get support for a plugin that I bought prior to the subscription model even being a thing. I went into this VSX thing knowing full well that I was not a Slate fanboi by any stretch of the imagination. Quite the opposite. I also paid full price for these through Sweetwater. Keep that in mind as you read on. Also keep in mind that I've been using the VSX system for one day, which is hardly conclusive. Further keep in mind that the promise of this product seems far too good to be true and given how much time and money I've put into my studio, I kind of don't want it to work.

First-off, it should be noted that this is a Slate Audio product, which is an entirely different company than Slate Digital. It's confusing and seems like an unnecessary distinction to me, but that's beside the point. The biggest thing to note about this is that Slate Audio products can use a software iLok registered to your computer, whereas Slate Digital requires a physical USB iLok dongle. I hate those little dongles. I hate the way they monopolize a USB port. I hate the way the older ones (I have an iLok2) would randomly not register on your system and make the plugins not authorize. I hate them. VSX, being a Slate Audio product allowed me to register the system to my computer as opposed to a dongle. Perfect.

On to the product itself. So, this should not be considered a pair of headphones. The headphones are simply the delivery method for a software package. The two are used together as a system. Don't buy these if you just want a nice pair of headphones. These are very nice headphones, but they're perhaps a little too flat for what most people would use headphones to do in a studio setting. More on that later, but suffice it to say that buying VSX just for the headphones would be like buying Reese's Peanut Butter cups just for the peanut butter. There are cheaper ways to get peanut butter if you don't want the chocolate. Likewise, VSX should not be separated into its two components. They're synergistic.

Binaural: The big deal here is that listening to a mix on a pair of speakers in a room is not a binaural environment. Your left and right ears aren't isolated from each other, and phantom center is a very real and important thing. Headphones are a binaural environment. The information that reaches the left ear does not reach the right ear, and there is no phantom center. The VSX system does some trickery and creates a faux non-binaural environment inside of the headphones. On my first listen I was admittedly shocked by how accurate the phantom center felt. In my studio, which (not to brag) is many times nicer than the vast majority of peoples' rooms here on Talkbass, phantom center is so perceptible that I have had people point to my more narrowly spaced nearfields as the sound source when the sound was actually coming from the midfields placed wider when listening to narrow sounds in the stereo field. I know what phantom center sounds like on a nice set of monitors in a heavily treated room. VSX nails it. When you use the VSX bypass everything snaps into the typical binaural sound and phantom center disappears. Engage VSX and there it is. There's also a depth control that defines how much of the room sound from each modeled studio space enters the sound which increases or decreases the amount of phantom center. This is VERY subtle and I was happy enough to leave it at noon, or full, or low. Super subtle. I'm admittedly shocked that they nailed the binaural and phantom center things so well.

Modeled spaces: They modeled three studios (NRG, Archon and Howie Weinberg's mastering room), a handful of headphones including some Senheiser models, a set of Apple Air Pods and one called HD-Linear that is reportedly ruler flat (more on that later), two cars for doing the infamous "car check" (a Tesla Model S and some Mercedes SUV), a dance club, an audiophile's listening space, and a boombox of some sort. The two studios each have nearfield, midfield and farfield monitor options and the documentation includes what they are. Everyone online absolutely raves about the Archon studio using the midfield monitors and on my initial uses I'm inclined to agree that it's probably the best all-around solution for mixing. I find the Howie Weinberg mastering room to sound dreadful and my experience matches what most online reviews say about it. A lot of great records have come out of that room so maybe there's some magic to it, or maybe the Slate VSX model of it is flawed in some way. I don't know either way. The headphones are interesting, most notably the HD-Linear model. @JKos and I were discussing this over PM last night. When you put the VSX into bypass mode you're just hearing the headphones without the binaural processing or any of the room modeling. According to the manual this mode is supposed to be ruler flat in terms of frequency response. I don't know if it's truly ruler flat or not, and given how headphones work due to cabin loading, ear size, ear canal shape, etc. I don't think any headphones can truly ever be ruler flat. Still, it appears that these are indeed very very flat if the bypass and the HD-Linear model equate to the same thing. Evidently Slate is working on an update that will do the HD-Linear flat frequency response but with the added binaural processing in-place, which is excluded from all of the headphone models.

Putting these into practice I pulled up a mix that I completed recently that I feel is the best mix I've ever done. Due to COVID I don't have many clients at the moment, so this was a multitrack download from PureMix of Bryce Drew's Lucky Number. I did the mix entirely on my midfields with a few checks on my nearfields and if I may be so bold, it sounds better than the commercial mix you can hear of the song on Spotify. I spent a lot of time getting it right, and it appears that I did. Listening to my mix on the VSX using the Archon midfields sounds different than in my space, but there's very little I would change. My next step is going to be to try and mix something from the ground up using VSX and see how it translates. That's all that matters. Do mixes on these translate? Does mixing go faster and/or more smoothly on these than using my monitors? I'll know soon enough. My initial impression is that for the vast majority of folks who don't have the luxury that I do with a nice monitoring system in a heavily treated room that was purpose-built as a recording studio, these are going to be miles ahead of buying monitors and putting them in an untreated room.

Just bought a SoundSource license so I can use VSX across my entire system rather than just in my DAW. Listening to some albums in Spotify to further familiarize myself with the various room models. Very interesting things are showing up that don't appear in my monitors. I don't know which is more accurate, but it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters in this regard is whether or not mixes translate on other systems. About to load up a multitrack and mix it cold using the VSX, mostly on the Archon Midfield setting using ear profile 1.
 
Okay... Now things get interesting. I just did a mix from the ground up using only the VSX. I grabbed the multitrack for Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" off of PureMix and went to it. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes to go from importing tracks to having a final mix that I would put out. I ran out to my car and checked it in true "old school engineer" fashion and it translated perfectly. This is crazy. It should not work this well. I hate that it works this good, while simultaneously loving that it works this well. I need to do more mixes on the VSX system to be sure that it's as good as I think it is, but this might be a very big deal for me. I was considering buying a pair of Barefoot Footprint M01s and the matching stands to upgrade from my current ADAM Audio setup, but now I'm thinking that I should saving the ~$6,000 USD and put it towards something else. Again, more testing required. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but this seems really really REALLY good.

It's not all roses of course. It's still mixing with headphones on, which is less comfortable over long periods of time than not having anything on your head. The strap pinches at the top of my head a bit. The ears are comfortable, fortunately. Other than that I'ms struggling to come up with much in the way of negatives. More testing...

Happy new year everyone!

My Invalid Link Removed arrived yesterday and I immediately got to work trying it out. I’m not really adding anything to the conversation, but here are my impressions:

The phantom center that “appears” when switching from the HD-Linear to the Archon midfield is insane. When I did that on my initial listen I wish there had been a camera on me. I leaned forward, cocked my head to the side, smiled and said out loud “no way.” That lack of phantom center has always made me HATE mixing on Invalid Link Removed. Getting this aspect of it right was going to be like 90% of the battle for me, and Invalid Link Removednailed it. I’m still a little shocked.

I’m using Invalid Link Removed through Invalid Link Removed so that I can hear stuff outside of my DAW (Logic Pro X, current version) through Invalid Link Removed. When using Invalid Link Removed as a plug-in inserted into Logic I can’t tell if the automatic bypass when bouncing is actually working. I took an existing mix, done outside of Invalid Link Removed, that I was happy with and threw Invalid Link Removed on the mat insert slot of my 2buss (this was with the Invalid Link Removed instance disabled). I then bounced without using the Invalid Link Removed internal bypass, and bounced again using the Invalid Link Removed internal bypass. I then loaded the two exported WAVs into a new session, flipped phase on one of them and despite not hearing any audible differences between the two files they did null down to just some echo’y, phase’y information on the sides with nothing apparent in the middle. I suppose that means he automatic internal bypass on bounce is doing something but I’m still not convinced that it’s working. The reason being that when I toggle between my preferred room (Archon, midfields like many other users) and the HD-Linear model, which is supposedly the same as the internal bypass, the sounds are VERY different. My solution to this is to just keep it in Invalid Link Removed and be diligent about bypassing when bouncing.

As for the sound and how it translates... ugh... After constructing a purpose-built studio that’s heavily treated and spending a lot of money on stereo nearfields (typical Avantone Invalid Link Removed pair) and a 2.1 ADAM midfield system I was secretly hoping that Invalid Link Removedwould be a gimmick that I could snicker at and immediately back to my obviously superior setup. That didn’t happen. Like all rooms, mine is not perfect despite all of the treatments and “correct” monitor placements. I’ve used Reference 4 and ARC2 to try and flatten out some problem areas in the 100-200hz range but something about the way those systems work makes mixed translate less well for me. My initial mixes with Invalid Link Removed, on the other hand, came together VERY quickly and sounded 90% of the way there on the first pass when listening on systems outside of the studio. Definitely faster than when mixing on monitors. The only downside that I’ve found is that wearing Invalid Link Removed for extended periods of time kind of stinks and all else being equal I would prefer to not where them. As far as Invalid Link Removed go they’re pretty comfy, so it’s not all bad. My ideal version of Invalid Link Removed would be built into a pair of custom-molded IEMs. Maybe someday that will be offered.

I suspect my new mix process will look like this: Import files, rough balance and do all editing on my monitors. Switch to Invalid Link Removed and mix, mostly using Archon midfields. Do mix checks on Invalid Link Removed rooms, then switch to monitors and do checks there. Switch back to Invalid Link Removed and make any necessary corrections followed by another round of checks and then likely sending the mix, bounced with Invalid Link Removed bypassed, to the client. I suspect I’ll be a lot closer with this approach on the first mix the client hears than I have been pre-Invalid Link Removed.

Steven, this is an alarmingly nice product. I suspect I could get similar results in my room with my monitors if I invested in a Trinnov for just over 10x the cost of Invalid Link Removed.


My second post:

After doing more mixing on them today I’ve noticed three things:

First, my Invalid Link Removed mixes have too much top end. All of my mixes have too much top end until I learn the room and speakers, so this is nothing new. Now I have to decide whether or not to just spend more time and learn them, to compensate with a bit of EQ in Invalid Link Removed to make it brighter and thus keeping me from overdoing it up top, or some combination of both.

Second, on my monitors I tend to end up with the kick too low on most of my “first pass” mixes and then I go back and fix it. With Invalid Link Removed I’m having the opposite problem. My mixes are ending up with the kick WAY out front. This isn’t a low end or top end thing, it’s the entire kick. The body, the attack, everything. This is one where I just need to learn them.

Lastly, I’m doing WAY less lead vocal automation and yet the vocal is sitting better in the mix from one end of a song to the other. That’s surely the result of other mix decisions upstream of the vocals but it’s still a big surprise. Automation is one of my least favorite parts of mixing, but I fully recognize how well used automation takes mixes to the next level, so I always just strap in and do a thorough job of it. If I have to do less automation overall that’s a big win for me and my workflow.
