My preamp journey

I have a Black Mountain Signal (60's console type preamp) on the way. Other than some mild lusting for a Sushibox Slampegg, for the first time in a long time I'm preamp GAS free.
I wish I had more gigs.I have jams but I'm really searching for a little situation.I f I can find something gig wise even once a month I'd be very happy. And I'd be able to utilize all my beautiful gear.I turned 66 a few days ago so many of my contemporaries have stopped playing or sadly died. Not a lot of young bands looking for geezer bassists.Plus the lockdown didn't help things.A lot of clubs closed and didn't reopen or stopped the live music scene.I keep plugging and I go on Craigslist and a couple of hookup services. Getting old sucks. On a lighter note as far as dirt pedals I like mine from preamps mainly but I have a few favorites like the SFT,that Ampeg sound. As far as fuzz my favorite is my Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie,smoothe as silk.I got a Z Vex clone and an SA After Shock that does everything but I can't program it. A crazy Rainger Dr.Freakenstein Dwarf bass fuzz,it's nuts.I have some nutty stuff like the Melekko Downer an octave and distortion thingee and Alexander Stargate Defender, a distortion, wacky can't explain type.A few of these pedals have a million different extended functions but I mostly can't figure out how to use them. And finally a Electrofaustus Superdisruptor bass another crazy distortion.I have many toys and I love them but I'd trade them all for a semi regular playing situation.Thank your lucky stars my brother and don't take a anything for granted. And most importantly,
Have fun!

Man, I hear ya. I'm lucky enough to live in a town with a ton of gigs, but now my job is picking up so I don't have a ton of time. My biggest issue is that most bands want a full time bass player and I don't have the time to dedicate ..

I'm new to Rickenbackers. Well, not entirely - my high school had a Ric that I played in jazz band. Haven't touched one in prob 30 years. Picked one up Monday (4003s) and I gotta say, I love the sound of a Ric through a fat, bassy preamp - like the Fatdrive. The treble bite of the Ric with a thick pre - sounds glorious.

Preamps like the Fatdrive, the Oracle, Noble, et al - and this include the Sushibox Finally - might sound so good due to the combination of a tube and a transformer. This is entirely me speculating, but there is something 3d quality like about the bigger preamps that I mentioned. This same quality is apparent when adding the Lightningboy 2020s to the signal change. It's subtle, but it's very apparent, especially when comparing side to side.

You could consider the Fatdrive to be similar to an Oracle, but with a different tone stack. Same thing with.the Broughton lunch box pres. All really good sounding stuff.

It will be interesting to see how the Black Mountain compares, since it also has a transformer - but no tube.

I'm seriously loving the Black Mountain. It does the 60's console vibe very well. I thought I had a 24v power supply here, but turns out it didn't fit, so ordered one. Can't wait to hear how it sounds with 24v!

Speaking 60s console I'm looking for a 24v for my Broughton and another ped that uses one.I ask because I've bought 12v adapters for things and they work on one thing but not the other.

Which Broughton do you have?
I got the two channel Broadcast.I really like it (I'm playing my bass with it as I type)I get nice warm clean tones and plenty of grit if wanted just from the clean channel. The distortion channel is over the top,in a good way. My strat also sounds awesome through it.I can see why guitarist like it .I looked up the Blk Mtn on YouTube and it sounds great. You should do a bass demo.

I've been thinking about doing some demos of various things, a lot of folks have asked me. I just don't have a great setup. Been thinking about taking the plunge and getting a Zoom camera with a great mic.

I've watched demos that guys did on their phones and they weren't too bad . I'm sure an industrious fellow like you could find a suitable and economic way to do so.

The.Black Mountain Signal sounds killer with 24v. I have the low gain channel set just below the OD threshold and the high gain set to give a good amount of dirt. Sounds really nice. Not smooth, like some others, but a little chunky. Not gritty, but almost like a clipping breakup. I still haven't cracked it open to mess with the trim pots.

Also, not sure what is wrong with me, but I found a phenomenal deal on a Pod Go, so ......

Yeah I actually have a zoom stereo recorder that sounds really good - I had forgotten about it. Maybe some audio only demos in the near future.
