My preamp journey

On amps -

One of the common questions when players go from "all in one" amps or a rack based system to a pedalboard preamp system is "what amp should I use?"

I went to pedal board preamps mostly due to portability. I know that I would always use pedals for most gigs, so I tried to consolidate as much as possible. I also have to be flexible - which meant that I had to be prepared for non-pedal gigs as well as gigs that I would have to share my amp with other bassists.

The market for pedal board amps isn't huge, so there it's no surprise to me that there were not a lot of options. I looked at stand alone power amps - there are actuall quite a few power amp only solutions out there - Demeter, Bassics, etc. That are quite expensive.

There are also some less expensive solutions that are still portable - the Ganz Straight Ahead SA-500 is a fantastic choice for lower volume gigs - I'm actgoing to pick another one up (watch the clipping though) . The Sumo and Baby sumo - while interesting - ended up being too big/heavy to be practical for a board.

I needed something 800 watts-ish, and ultimately tried to look for something super flat that could also use as a stand alone amp. The Quilter BB800 ended up fitting the bill nicely.

I've been very happy with the Quilter. The power section was designed to have tube amp characteristics, and it sounds fantastic.

That being said, i ended up selling a few other things and with the proceeds picked up a GR Bass One 800. This thing kills. More portable than the Quilter - I have a laptop sleeve that I slip it in and it fits very nicely into my gigbag. It sounds more "pure" than the Quilter, and the EQ is much more flexible. What I really like is that the GR has a "preamp bypass" button that completely removes the preamp from the signal chain. Perfect for pedalboard based preamps.

So gonna give this a shot for awhile and see how it does!

The dog did a pretty good number on my hand. Still not 100%, but looks like little permeant damage and that shouldn't (fingers crossed) affect my playing long term.

I finally was able to play a little bass this weekend. Gotta say that the combo of the JHS and the SIB is just killer. So much so that I'm reconfiguring my middle board. I posted a few things up on the classified, but I'm making some more tough decisions.

Also, Demeter amp and Grace Designs Alix inbound.
It really never ends does it,get that hand right.

Seriously? Please send photos or it's just fake news.
Did you consider opening a museum?

Next time I "need" to buy "just one more pedal", I will show your photos to prove that "you already have too many" is very relative… :)

I actually have a hard time fitting everything in one location, much less one photo, but here is a shot from some years ago. I don't have all of these, currently.

And actually, yes, I am thinking about doing a "Bass Gear Magazine Virtual Museum" with comparison videos of a bunch of this stuff!

So Talkbass.
I once said that I would swap between the Kern IP-777 and the Demeter HPB-1 between songs. Tombowlus called that "excessive." Hmmmmmmmm:):):):)
Meanwhile owning every Pre in the universe without having a Glockenklang BAC is not owning every Pre in the universe. :):):):)
No offense. You only hurt the ones you Love. :):):):)

LOL! I think that was only because I could get great tones out of both the IP-777 and the HBP-1, such that switching between songs would be excessive - certainly not the owning of both! And in my defense, I do own a Bass Art Classic head and cab. ;)

Tom has been one of my "gear heroes" for a long time, and one of the inspriations for this tgthread TBH. I have loved reading his reviews over the years :-)

And Tom, I'm really tempted on a few of the "maybe for sale" items lol.

So I've spent about the last 7-8 weeks or so healing from a dog bite and haven't been playing much. That, and I just started a new job, so haven't had much time to mess with gear.

That being said, I am at a point where I'm extremely, extremely happy with my tone and capabilities. On one board I'm running the JHS Colour box into a Sushibox Slampegg and the SOB Fatdrive. It's absolutely tonal heaven.

On my other board I have a Grace Designs Alix into a Master Effects Thespian and then into the Noble. Very happy.

I also picked up a few preamps with amp sims for a grab and go. I picked up a DSM Simplifier, a Shift Line Olympic, and an Origin Bassrig 64. As I heal I'm putting the three through their paces, I'm gonna play preamp Thunderdome and keep one and sell the other two.

They all sound fantastic. The DSM is definitely the most flexible out of the three, but I prefer the Fender Tonestack. The Shift Line sounds phenomenal - it's everything it's cracked up to be and then some. Tubey goodness. But, the Bassrig has an LPF and HPF built in.

That doggie did a number on you Moon. You really have some top notch pre's going on.You could actually pick em out of a hat and be good.I'm still waiting on my Flex that's stuck in the Russian Post somehow. Also I still can't get arrested, nevermind a gig.

Are you still using the Arkham Oracle?

Hey @moon-bass, what's the latest?
Been hella busy as of late!

I started a new job and have been doing some work travelling. Between that, my home being redone (finally fixing hurricane Ida damage - everything in my music room is literally sitting i a pile in the back of my house), and recoving from the dog bites, I haven't had much time for bass and preamps.

that being said, I've been very happy with my set up as of late, and dare I say that my preamp journey has slowed, if not pretty much come to a meandering end. I am REALLY happy with the tones that I have.

I ended up with three boards (small, medium, large) and a Pod Go. The small board main tone shaper are the Master effects Super 300 and a Sushibox Finally. The medium, a SIB FatDrive, a Sushibox Slampegg, and a JHS Colourbox, with a Nobels providing dirt. The large, a Grace Designs Alix into a Master Effects Thespian, and then into a Noble DI, with a Free The Tone Bass Blaster providing a tinge of dirt. There are other components of course, once I get my boards unburied I'll post pics and a full rundown of my signal chain.

I'll also post a "lessons learned/retrospect" post as well. Hopefully that will help others looking for their tone. for instance, prior to all of this I was very dirt adverse, but finding the "right" dirt is crucial for a lot of types of music.

I'm hoping that by next month I'm healed enough to start playing out again and really start using my stuff :-)

I am actually not - I ended up selling it, no place on the board. It's an amazing preamp, but the FatDrive and the Oracle just don't both fit.

I had been researching the Oracle and read through your post extensively. 3 weeks later... and I now have an Arkham Oracle DI version ;). I'm not used to all of these knobs and switches! It's hard to choose settings... They all seem to sound good! Especially after having used the TrueVoice Low End preamp for so long, which only has a gain knob that really changes anything.

Yeah the Oracle is fantastic. I'm going to miss mine!
