Here is one that I have heard many times and recently saw typed on TB.

That is a tough "road" to hoe. The term is a tough "row" to hoe as in a farmer has a hard time hoeing a row because the ground is hard or rocky.

Ok, here are mine:

The short of microphone is mic, not mike. When I see "Tonight, open mike night!" I go berserk.

A bass is not a "she". Bass is fully the most masculine, male instrument. Bass=Balls. It's testosterone. It is not feminine.

I do not like the term "bass guitar". It's a bass. Or an electric bass. Leo took the upright (aka string bass) and made it electric.

Firstly. Microphone can be either truncated to 'mic' or 'mike'.

Second. Bass is feminine. Who wants to hold a guy against their chest every night?

Third. Wrong again. It will always be a bass guitar. Leo took the upright and fused it with a guitar. You can refer to it how you like, but the term 'bass guitar' will live forever. Amen.

Should be p'ups, yeah? As in a contraction, the apostrophe indicates the dropped letters.

Another one that I see all over TB and seems to be a common one amongst our US bretheren:

"chord" -this is NOT a cable/lead - in this context that is a "cord".

and referring back to an earlier post -we Scots used the term "burgh" going back to the 12th century and its pronounced bur-a, not borr-ow

Let's face it: A lot of people are borderline illiterate. And the sheer ubiquity (look it up! ) of the Internet, with its emphasis on good writing skills, really makes any language deficiencies painfully apparent.

For me, it makes participation in nearly any online forum into a bittersweet experience - at best. Maybe that's what it's like to have perfect pitch - in a world full of imperfectly-tuned music.

Sad but true. Just to temper that, I always proofread, pay attention to spell check, and nearly always find mistakes. It was a big eye opener for me.I'm not particularly educated, but like to improve so, in addition to what you said above, what makes a lot of difference is that some people care, and some don't.
Sadly, the ones who don't are often the same people who would get fighting mad if called or thought of as stupid, illiterate or lacking education.

Yeah, where did that come from? I see "loose" in place of "lose" so often now I fear it's too late.

So what do those misspellers write when they mean "loose"...?

One I see often is "barley used" (barely). Perhaps the bass was used to thresh grain.
