N.B.A. thread

I see what you mean, but no complaints about Lebron from here. Some people who are tremendous competitors have to cash themselves all in to get ready for battle, and that's part of what makes them great. I think for a guy barely 30 he's made a lot of progress in his sportsmanship. While he has his annoying narcissistic moments, compared to a lot of other superstars he's a pretty reasonable sort overall IMO.

Great game, and great series. I have to say that these finals surprised me a bit by how good they were given the Cavs' injury issues. Also a little surprised at how much I enjoyed the finals these past two years. It didn't hurt that some of my least favorite players were nowhere near the playoffs, but what I've seen with the Spurs last year and the Warriors this year is two incredibly well coached teams playing team ball with a lot of offensive options and unbelievable passing on one end of the floor and excellent team defense on the other. Kerr was unbelievable this season getting the most out of these players and putting adjustments together along the way. It's also great to have another thoughtful, likable, classy coach in the mix, and I would extend that compliment to Blatt as well.

Moving forward, without considering free agency, etc. the Warriors are in great shape with a young core and a deep bench. Unless Bogut is way better than he showed in this series, I think they could do better with a more athletic role player at the 5, but other than that why would you want to change much about a 67 win NBA champion?

The Cavs are another story, but assuming they keep their core and everyone gets healthy, the core of James, Irving, Love, Mozgov, Varejao, and Thompson is a great one that has a lot of versatility and options, but it's top heavy. Aside from Irving, they are very thin at the guard position, and they don't have much in the way of pure shooting. Shumpert had no shot this series, and Smith is simply a knuckle headed toxic drop of chemistry in the mix - he can catch fire and hit a lot of shots, but he can also do absolutely nothing for extended periods, and that's not the kind of steady influence this team needs. Dellevadova could be a nice backup hustle player, but he's a limited talent. Miller is done. Jones had a few nice plays, but doesn't seem to have much left in the tank. I think some some consistent shooters are what this team needs most so LBJ doesn't have to play the point.

Warriors were/are awesome,.. congrats to them all. :) imo though,.. Kerr out-coached Blatt by the shear depths of his bench. the Cavs bench lacked accuracy shooting and passing. and the switching on defence was just terrible. i've never seen a final series with so many uncontested 3-point shots. i lost track of the Cavs turnovers after number 18! if you can't play defense at least take care of the ball!
btw,.. i missed most of the 2nd half,.. the writing was on the wall.

...I'm not a LeBron hater. I think he put on quite a display of talent in this series. But in the final 4-5 minutes of the game, it was like he had given up. Yeah, he was trying to make plays, but my impression was that his heart wasn't in it anymore.

With the season on the line, it seemed like he just folded. If there is one knock on "The best player on the planet", he doesn't seem to have that "battle to the end" mentality like other great players (of any sport) had/have.

And one more thing, he needs to show better sportsmanship. I know he lost another Finals, but the appearance of sportsmanship, by shaking Curry's hand and Kerr's hand before the end of the game, was only that, an appearance. Watched closely, he didn't say a word. And, he left the court immediately after the buzzer, while his teammates stayed on the court and congratulated the winners...

I noticed these things, as well.

The Cavs who were on the court suck...suck, suck, suck have no idea how to pass, can't score worth a lick and the coach should not have them ever double-team anyone, ever. They aren't smart enough. How many times did Curry pass out of a double-team to leave two Cavs defenders with a brain fart, stainding in quicksand while another player gets an easy layup or a 3?

Tristian Thompson is way too soft for a big man. He's prone to brain farts as well, and once he gets a little better control of his body he will easily pull down another 5 boards and 8 or so points per game.

I remember when Iman Shumpert was a rookie, I was thinking "Man this guy is going to be a terror for anyone he ever guards!" He was seriously lockdown...but he tore his acl, came back and is now only an above-average defender, but still a below-average scorer

Not sure I'm sold on Iggy getting the MVP. Other than that it went about how I figured it would.

LeBron was just too tired to give much more. I think I disagree with him not battling to the end. Even top tier athletes have a limit. He carried his team from the 2nd game on. The first game was adrenaline and hope. I'm not an anyone apologist but if anyone could watch that series and think he slacked at any point, I don't know. I saw frustration at times. We all get that when we are doing the lions share of something, feeling whupped and hope someone would step up. DelaD did for a few games but if we're honest he played above his level. The proverbial "110%" if you will. His tank ran dry at the same time Curry got hot. That was the death knell. Without star power around him LeBron was going to lose. With those people back, the Cavs might have won.

Still, great series. Glad I watched. It's the first NBA finals I've watched every game of in forever.

A few thoughts from here:
It's pretty cool that the W's did this with almost all home-grown talent. No trades for big name players. The trade for Bogut (several years ago) was about it. For years, while the W's sucked, I'd see all these big trades go down and think "JEEZ! why don't the W's grab a few superstars?". Kind of satisfying to get to this moment without having done the "buy a star" thing.

LeBron. Wow. By himself he came pretty close to making up a 5 man team. My respect for his abilities on the court have grown tremendously.

About LeBron and the MVP - I heard an interesting thought about that. If you think about MVP as "the guy who made the biggest difference in the outcome of the series" (rather than "the best player"), you have to think "without this guy, what would have happened?"
Without LeBron, the Cavs would have lost. With him, they lost. No change in outcome. Sure, they would have lost faster and uglier. But the outcome would not have changed.

So on that argument, I'm fine with Iggy getting the MVP.

Finally, I think the W's played some great defense and great ball. Not their best, but great. I'd love to hear some talk about that, as opposed to just hearing how beat up the Cav's were.

Yeah I agree with the LeBron sentiment for the MVP. I think he would have had to force a game 7 to be in the conversation. He put up crazy numbers, but he took a crazy amount of shots to do it too. Both sides of the fence have good points. I think with Iggy, though, he gave up all those points. LeBron put it up a ton, but the guy guarding him didn't slow him down at all and for the 2nd time the guy guarding LBJ gets the MVP nod. In all honesty I don't really know who I would give it to. It's just that Iggy didn't start a game all year, was a 6th man on the bench then gets the nod. I don't feel it. I'm not sure who else should get it, but I'm not feeling the Iggy vote. Of course this is my own view and doesn't amount to a hill of beans :D

Regarding the MVP, it's cool that Iggy got it. James shouldered an unbelievable load (and performed very well most of the time), but I am of the school that says someone on the winning team should get it.

Was James' effort somehow lacking last night? I didn't see it. He took some jumpers, sure, but he can't just drive the lane on every possession--you have to mix it up. He did commit six turnovers, but once again, the Warriors' defense was able to swarm him (as well as Mozgov) because absolutely no one on the Cavs was a real threat from the outside--other than JR Smith in the final two minutes.

Speaking of which, here's your Delly/Shumpert/Smith update: 6-of-24 combined. Oh well, at least they shot less.:rollno:

I also don't get the criticism of James' sportsmanship last night at all. He shook hands/hugged both Curry and Kerr--I don't see how that was "for the cameras" but somehow the postgame handshakes aren't. And we can all rattle off a TON of occasions when superstars slinked off the court after losing a series without the slightest acknowledgement of the opponent. The Bad Boys-era Pistons famously did it, KG and Pierce have done it a million times, Jordan's done it, Dirk did it in 2011 after winning, etc. As for Tim Duncan, he's one of my favorite players ever and classy in a number of ways, but man, he's complained to the refs more than anyone I've ever seen (yes, including LBJ).

The Warriors are a great team, no dislike for'em here at all. Management did a great job of building the roster, Kerr made the right moves (eventually), and they play great team offense and good team D. They're fun to watch.

Yeah great series. Fun one to watch from opening tip of game 1 to the final horn. I agree I'm with the mindset that MVP should go to a member of the winning team and for that to change it has to be a ridiculous output from a player to change my mind. Well Lebron came close lol Averging 35 pts and practically a triple double every night. First player in Finals history to lead BOTH teams in points, rebounds, and assists?!?!?! Thats ridiculous. And I know some might say they gave Iggy the MVP for slowing down Lebron yet he averaged nearly a triple double? Well that shouldnt be a knock on Iguodala because anyone that watched the game and not just read the stat sheet knows he put in work against Lebron. I think he definitely deserved the award and it was nice to see that 2 years in a row defense is heavily weighed for the MVP decision. Congrats GSW. Enjoy it for the time being, my Clippers will whoop that ass next year

Lance Stephenson you say?!?!?! ok well.........

Funky Ghost, as a 6er's fan were you surprised the Cavs didn't figure out that Andre is a point guard in a small forwards body. The way they allowed him to get out on the break was stupid and he made the Cavs famous. In the 3 games he started they beat the Cavs by double figures in 2 of them and last night by 8.....and they still haven't figured it out:cool:

I was super impressed with their defense; everybody played good, hard solid defense. Far as I can tell. And Klay Thompson was especially impressive to me when he had to guard LeBron James; he never backed down, lost his position or lost any confidence. He even blocked at least a couple shots that I can remember.

That's funny I was kinda thinking the same thing. "I was like uh...y'all do know this is Andre Iguoudala right?"

Dude had a chip on his shoulder didn't he? To answer the question, Kinda surprised actually. There is enough tape on him. Maybe I'm just a tad bitter, if I'm honest. :sorry: We can't talk about Jrue either. :bag:

Management changes, money restrictions, tomfoolery, all of the aforementioned. Can we talk about Moses!!! The thing is in Philly they wanted Andre to be the next Allen and he isn't built that way and they didn't built a complimentary team around him. Same with Jrue.

Speaking of knuckleheads...
Doc as a GM--ouch, babe. I mean, there are already rumors of a Griffin/Paul rift, and then you bring this moron into your locker room? Don't get it at all. I know the Clips are cap-strapped, but there HAD to be a better answer than this.
