I did it. I finally freakin did it! After I spent the weekend at the Chicago Blues Festival, I took a walk down Lincoln Avenue to the Chicago Music Exchange. There, amongst the brother P-Basses and sister J-Basses, was my Holy Grail of bass guitars: the 1966 Fender Precision.

My wife doesn't understand, but I told her I'd sell several of my basses ('80 Peavey T-40; Fender MIA Jazz V; Fender 70's Classic Jazz; Lakland Duck Dunn), then make up the difference. Thanks to Marc Najjar, the bass guy there for hookin me up. I should have it Friday morning when I get off shift... all set up with flats, ready to rattle the walls and windows.

You're gonna sell the PEAVEY!!??

:bawl:

It's probably clearing customs now, on its way to Toronto. It is a beautiful bass but, obviously, heavy as an anvil. I bought it more out of sentiment...for my first ever bass, but it struggled for playing time. I've spent the afternoon with my '66, and I'm without regret.

...course I haven't yet sold my '70s Classic Jazz. That will really hurt.

Man, I love the wear on it. Is it an A width neck? I have a 69 (yonger polyurethane brother to yours) and it has a C width neck.

I used fender flats on mine for a while but recently tried Dunlop roundwound Nickel mediums and I am sold. You can get the warmth of flats or the burp of a Jazz bass depending on where you play in relation to the bridge.

I caught the Gos Gos at Count Basie. New bass player, which In my humblest of opinions was an improvement and it looked like she was playing a sort of a mutant p through an SVT.

Confident tone. The pocket. Tone wise.

I'm a fan of my micro. But I know it isn't an SVT.

Here's a question, Will the engineers and various other that have given us so many great toys already develop a micro with that SVT pocket filling tone? While weighing 40 lbs?

lovely... machines are 70's.

Yeagh, I'm not enough of a Fender historian to know that, but I'm gonna check with Marc at CME today about that. It's not a super big deal to me, since this is definitely a player, not a collector. It'd be good to know. Some time in the coming weeks, I'll prolly take some photos of the pots, pickups, and the neck heel...just to have them.

Mine's a C-width. That's one of my biggest reasons for playing Precision basses. My fretless p-bass is also C-width. Not only is it 1-3/4" nut-width, but profile wise...it's thicker than many telephone poles in my area. I spent pretty much all of Father's Day with it, my SVT and our revamped setlist.

I got this PM from a TBer, who also noticed my keywinds seemed not to be '66...

Hi,
I was admiring your new '66 P, she's a beauty!! I noticed something and I didn't see you didn't mention it on your thread, so I was wondering if you were aware of it.. I noticed that the tuners on your '66 have the "R" stamped next to "Fender". Fender did start using those style tuners in as early as '66/67, but they just had "Fender" stamped on them before the '70s. The "R" was added in ~'72.

...so I checked with Marc at CME, who said, "As far as I know, the tuners, along with everything else, appears to be original. Our vintage manager, Daniel Escauriza, personally took this bass apart and gave it accurate notes (which are also listed on our website).

We pride ourselves on full disclosure of every instrument we have in our store, so much so that we put every detail on our site. I'll chat with him about this today and make sure we get this straightened out. As for any documentation we can provide, I'll see if we can mail you a signed appraisal with our letterhead for your records."

He also sent me some photos, which are in my next reply.

Nice! What are you stringing it with?

It came set up with Chromes, per my request...which are the only flats I've ever used. I suspect I'll be trying some different ones in the near future. Maybe I'll try some "period-correct" Fenders.

Nice bass! But then I noticed a familiar logo peeking out behind the body of that P-bass.

2010 Outback Bowl shirt, purple ball cap...do you happen to be Northwestern football fan?

Yes...I've been a rabid Wildcats fan since my growin' up days in Evanston. II try to get out there every year for a 'Cats game, some blues time on Halsted Street and a sniff around CME. This is the first time I've walked in there with a wallet.
