NAD-Super Bassman

Had my 100T for a week now. Nearly sold my Orange AD200 but decided to hang on to it as it has a bit more clean headroom than the 100T if I need it. As has been said, the 25/100 watt switch is a really cool and practical feature, as is the overdrive in the modern channel. The vintage channel nails that original 70's Bassman vibe. The dealer tried to sell me the matching 610, but I actually prefer it into my Bergantino NV215 cab. However, I am trying to get in the 115Neo cab that Fender has just put out - looks the part with the silver cloth and should be fine for practicing and easy to shift at under 45 pounds (+ she indoors won't complain about the looks or size).

Youre the second person to say that, but I find my 100t has MORE clean headroom than the Orange had....how weird.....I thought my orange had ridiculously low clean headroom, but im real happy with the 100t.

To be fair on the Fender we are comparing 100 watts with the Orange's 200 watts, and it still does go loud. As far as the Orange goes, I had always heard that these breakup early but mine never has and consequently has heaps of clean clout. The two heads are voiced very differently and complement each other quite nicely I feel.
The more I play the Fender the nore I am bonding with it, but glad I did not get the 300 - when I need that sort of power I would rather go the traditional way and take the SVT.

Ah man!!! You guys are making me so jealous...
Tim, did you get my email I set you regarding the orange and 100T??

I just picked up the new 410 bassman neo cab, but the tube heads aren't gonna be in UK fr another few months.
I was intent on the 100T or superbassman but am torn between is the 100T gonna be loud enough and is the super just gonna be ridiculous unecessary overkill.?

So based on this thread and Tims comments I went and tried a AD200 orange head the other day and loved it. But I haven't had a chance to try a 100T yet.

Hard choice!!!! Can the 100T go as loud as the orange? I hear it's a LOUD 100watts

Hi Loveboatcaptain. I received two emails about the 100T and replied to both. One of those people had banned receiving private emails in some way and my reply did not get through so I tried replying through a separate message - maybe that was you???
Anyway, I don't know whether this is what you want to hear but my Orange AD200 has clearly more clean headroom than the 100T, although the 100T goes plenty loud. Note that each is voiced very differently, the Orange has a dominant bottom end while the Fender is very clean and flat sounding. The extra features on the Fender are very practical and very useful though. If you are worried about volume I would go for the Orange to be safe, it is still quite light (much lighter than the Fender 300) and has quite a unique character to it.

Hi Tim, yeah Could've been me. It was just an email asking which you prefer after spending considerable time with both.

I play Ric basses and have been dying to get the 'right' tube head to get that proper aggressive Ricky sound for ages. My previous SS amps just don't quite do it.

Do you think the auto bias feature is a deal winner? I like the idea that if a valve fails then the amp lets you know and the remaining valve compensate. This wouldn't be the case with the orange, what would happen if a valve failed with the orange head during a show?

For me im finding my 100t has plenty of cleanish headroom, especially depending how you EQ. If you try for that bass heavy sound then it chews up the headroom, but if you are judicious with it for a balanced tone it has plenty. I find that its transition out of "clean" is much smoother than the orange which for me went from clean to kinda farty overdrive while the fender just starts breathing a little fire, then a little more and a little more and does it real smooth and nice. I get a more usable range than I did with my orange.

Tim, I run my bias one notch below normal...do you find that the back panel gets quite hot when you play live?

An interesting observation, eyeball, as I thought the opposite when comparing the two. Might have been my settings though - I have not tried it live yet, just at practice. I must experiment with the bias - what difference do you find it makes to the tone at one notch down?
And loveboatcaptain, yes I think the autobias is a huge plus, although I am not overly keen on the long term reliability of the stick on plastic thingy for adjusting it hot or cold. I would have preferred more mechanical knobs.

Well if you adjust it all the way up or down you will notice the differences, one notch down is very subtle from normal and gives just a little less drive and a little more "au naturale".

So when you practice for an hour or so, does it get hot?

I used the 100t for rehearsal last night in 25w mode and it was awesome! I can't wait to run the 100w mode tonight. The 25w was plenty loud for practice and I still had plenty of room to turn up. I like a nice clean tube sound and the 100t offered plenty of it. I used the overdrive channel for a little bit of a bass boost and added a hair of a nice warm crunch in there and it was such a good balance going between the two channels. I really wish that fender offered people a good video of what this amp is capable of. All of their videos shocker the overdrive and that's about it, but the clean channel is amazing and has tons of head room.

I just received a Super Bassman and matching 610 in for review, and I'm hoping to gig this rig tomorrow night at a nice venue. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Look forward to the review! Wondering if I might replace my SVT with one of these heads. Not that they are the same sound or anything, just looking for something a little cleaner than the SVT... Maybe
