NAD! SVT7 Pro (also comparing it to my Streamliner 900)

Doh, that's what I was afraid of (in a good way! :) ). Thanks for the info. Do you know if it has been through multiple revisions and sorted out like the 7 has? IIRC, it was coming to market when SLM still had Ampeg but only a few were made, then it seemed to fall off the radar during the Loud transition. Sorry for the slight derail but I haven't seen anything on it in some time and it sounds pretty badass (as does the 7!).

Oh boy John, you are making this amp sound really attractive...
My only head right now is a Streamliner 900, which I like a lot.
I need a backup as well as something that can sound different.
I want something that is versatile and will sound good through a fEARful 15/6/1.

I was thinking about a GK MB800. I was thinking about waiting for the Baer Valkyrie. Now you muddy the waters with this bad boy.

I'll have to go listen for myself of course, but can you (or anybody) compare and contrast these options?

i haven't tried the GK MB800. i'm sure it's a good amp, but since i have a 1001RBII, i feel that i have the "GK sound" pretty much covered. I really like my streamliner 900 but i like the 7Pro quite a bit more so the SL900 is now destined to be my backup for it. i'm going to take them both to my next gig in 3 weeks and compare them with the full band. the SL900 was awesome at my last gig and i expect the same from the 7 pro.

as far as Rodger's new head, i'm sure that it's going to be something really special, since he and i pretty much agree on everything as far as amps and cabs go. i plan to go visit him (or he's going to come out to my place) when he has one for me to try out, and i'm really looking forward to that.

Well this thread certainly has taught me a thing or two about tubes, namely why Mullards are so high priced. Used to be happy with whatever tubes were in an amp, now I want Mullards in everything ;)

I've tried a pile (in fact Chef has a box of about 10)
The Telefunkens have worked the best for me in the V1 position.
Also like Amperex and Mullards followed by the older US tubes; generally prefer long plates; some cheap National long plates sound surprisingly good
The differences are not huge but when you A/B them the $50 for the good used tube seems worthwhile and they seem to last forever

Mine is a Made in the USA 8Pro, so it's one of the earlier ones, and I have had no issues. I have not heard of any troubles with the current production runs, either.

Thank you so much for the really useful review and the great clips. The SVT7pro sounds like a great amp but I'm still leaning towards the Streamliner 600 through either NeoX or Focus LT 112's because I really need to use a lighter weight amp than the SVT7Pro but with great tube tone like the Streamliner.

thanks. i'm glad to hear that you found this thread useful, and could possibly get a better idea of what this amp sounds like with the clips. for me, it's the best sounding new head that i've bought since my VR in '07.

i'm really lovin' this thing!

The compression sounds great on the stingray clip. Great playing too. I like to hear samples like yours. Just good, regular, useful examples. I find all the slappity double thumb stuff pretty useless. The first two svt-4 pro heads that I had, the compression and amp in general sounded really good and then everyone after that I played through sounded lifeless and squashed.
