NAM (Neural Amp Modeler) big thread

Do these hyper accurate captures run on the hardware devices or are they downsampled and behave like more standard NAM captures?

I noticed the GP-5 is now available at the usual online retail shops.

As much as I can play in the home office; I’m really a couch player at heart. lol.

To the best of my knowledge the GP5 will only play standard captures. But I truly can't be positive.
 
I did a bit of a TGP read on it and seems so. How downgraded is not clear. Iirc they’re the same parent corp as sonicake pocket master
Leo Gisbon measures the quality loss of all pedals, whether they convert initial .nam format into a less CPU intensive intrnal format, or not. He makes NULL test of all pedals on his Youtube channel.

I think it is wise to say that the quality loss on theses pedals when they convert to a lower quality format is audible when playing solo, but it probably won't make any audible difference in a band mix.

Of course, for those of us who can afford high end pedal like the Anagram, the quality of the player is almost as good as the plugin.

Totally agree. What blows my mind is the Darkglass element was like $250 new just a handful of years ago.

Now these little $55 boxes can replicate the functionality and add the NAM loaders and beyond.

At home on the couch my nano cortex has been doing the trick but it’s too easy to just throw the pocket master in my bag when I’m traveling and know there’s guitars waiting at the destination like when staying with relatives over the holidays.

I totally don't know what I'm doing. But spent some time experimenting with NAM in a DAW.

I chained a Doom2 into a B15 using the Tonocracy plugin. Not sure about how to set the in/out levels correctly. But I enjoyed the sounds I got.

I am struggling here. Every tutorial I've been able to find for the NAM assumes I have a level of knowledge that I don't have. For example, step two of the training page is to "Reamp your gear. Then reamp the gear you want to model using it." I do not know how to Reamp my gear.

Most of the tutorial videos about how to capture gear are similar, and/or are from NAM was a lot less popular and contain things like "Steve in the Facebook Group made a great tutorial on this part, so I'm not going to go over it again."

I have a Radial Re-Amp box I borrowed from a friend, an Audient iD4, and a couple of old Peavey solid-state heads I want to model. Could someone please point me in the right direction of a beginner-friendly tutorial so I can route all my cables and twiddle all my knobs correctly?

I agree that it's not super easy and well documented. I've struggled at the beguining, and still haven't seen a straightfoward tutorial.
One of the reason is that there are many ways to do it, depending on your gear.

The main principles are:
  • You need to have 2 files:
    1. File 1 "input" is a reference audio file
    2. File 2 "output" is the sound of this reference recorded through the gear you want to capture.
  • The software will create the tone capture by comparing these 2 files. It will "train" until there's almost no difference between the output file and the input file+tone capture.
Reamping is not the only solution. It's one obvious way to produce the ouput file - probably the best - but I've seen people recording simulteanously one bassline dry, and one "wet" (same source going through the gear they want to capture), and send these 2 files to the training software. I don't know much about this method, since I use the "reamping" method. It's probably more intuitive for some people, but I'm not sure that the bass line you record in that case will contain the same diversity of sound that has been carefully selected by the official NAM team in the official "input.wav" file the provide? But I've seen this, I think @IvanBassist talks about it in the Anagram thread?

You need:
  • A computer with a DAW (Logic Pro, Reaper, Cubase…). Garageband won't work for reamping because it doesn't let you assign your track to a specific output
  • An audio interface with enough I/O
  • A reamp box
  • The amp or pedal you want to capture
My method
  • Import the official file "input.wav" in track 1 of the DAW
  • Assign it to the output 3 of the audio interface
  • Plug the output 3 of the audio interface into the reamp box (the reamp box will transform the line level signal it receives into an instrument level signal)
  • Output of the reamp box into the amp or pedal I want to capture
  • DI-out of the amp or pedal into the input 1 of the audio interface
  • Record the reamped signal on a new track 2 on my DAW
  • Normalise track 2 so that it has the same level as track 1
  • Export track 2 as "output.wav"
The length of "input.wav" and "output.wav" much match perfectly, otherwise the conversion will fail. I had a hard time figuring how to trim the output file to the exact same length as the input file.

I could make a Youtube video of this method, but it would only feature an example with my DAW, my audio interface and so on.

Would I be correct in assuming that it will capture specific EQ settings and as such I should capture my EQ approximately how I'd want my amp to sound? Or should I leave it all flat and just EQ after the fact (in the DAW or on the NAM interface?) I feel like I am seeing both in the Tone3000 library, captures of just specific amps with the EQ flat and amps with the EQs set a certain way, though maybe that is to compensate for amps with "tone stacks" where the EQ points all interact with each other.

Exactly. You capture the amp or pedal with its current settings. One capture is a "snapshot" of the gear with a specific setting. That's why in Tone3000 you see a bunch of captures for the same amp, each capture corresponding to a specific setting.

The player (plugin or compatible pedal) may have an EQ option, but it's a generic EQ added after the capture, it doesn't sound exactly like the original EQ of the amp you have captured.

You can make a capture of your amp or pedal with a "flat" setting (= what you consider to be "neutral"), and add other captures of the settings you prefer.

What do you think about the pedals capture? Are they good? Many people IMO would like to use nam just for effects with his own amp.
I’ve captured my stompboxes and I would not use them just because I have a real thing. But if stompbox is a big, old annoying thing, I would capture it to fit my pedalboard.
Yesterday I’ve got LA Lady stompbox which has digital distortion and I’ve used Aftershock presets, it works but I think that it won’t last long. But it’s the same thing with digital sound. You just can like it or not, just don’t think about tweaking the knobs.
