I don't buy strings, I clean them in denatured alcohol for 24 hours, then they're almost like new. I just have to make sure the alcohol isn't kept within the reach of drummers.
I did buy a few sets, though, because sometimes you do have to replace strings. There's a guy on German ebay, basskontor, selling "strings that were shortly on Fender basses", which I suspect are just regular roundwound Fender 7250. They're fine. I like them and he sells them for about a third of the new price.

These are for a new bass, and a switch over. Otherwise I don't really buy strings either. The GHS flats on my Jazz, have been there for over 5 years. The tapes on my acoustic bass the same time. Because I want flats in the p style, and int's a string through, plus 5 string I can't sway the flats over from my Jazz. And i'd lie to see more of the Jazz's character with pressurewound, and to have more tonal variety between the electiics.
I do change strings on my guitars a bit more frequently, and they have DAddarioes on them. Here the atmosphere kills the unwound plain steels, so they now have DAddrios wounds EADG and Eliirs'su plain steels. Elixer's coating really does stop corrosion .

Amazon. Inventory status and shipments have been 100% accurate, and speedy. I immediately get tracking info, and because I buy as a subscription, I get a great price on the strings I love.

Sam Ash or Sweetwater. I get LaBella RX Steel strings from whomever has them in stock and/or the cheapest. Usually $26 for a set, but I have found it cheaper. For C# F# B E tuning, I get a custom set from S.I.T. Strings. They did them in the gauges: .115, .100, .080, .060.
Enjoy them. They are back up to $19 on Amazon now. Fretnation stays around $14-$15 on them.
Hmmm. I'm seeing $14.39 for the non-subscription price this morning on Az.
Even if they did go up above FN pricing, I'd still stick with Az for all the other reasons I listed. I tried supporting BSO in the past but they didn't work out for me. Nice to have a bunch of options, though.

just to answer the question: mostly amazon (for roto rounds, in bulk) but i shop around for pricing when it's time to order the TI jazz rounds (ebay, amazon, others maybe).

I like Rotosound Swing 66 and Chromes, so typically get them from Amazon or Musician's Friend depending on who has them in stock.

I had used Bass Strings Online (now Fret Nation) up until Jason, the owner, apparently got mad and removed my account because I asked to cancel an order that I received no communication on for over two weeks. Because of his unprofessionalism and childish way of handling that transaction, I won't ever go back.
