Thanks for the well wishes everyone!

For me, rosewood, tort and sunburst is the ultimate combination. From late 1959, this bass was one of the first Fender made with those options. With the covers on it reminds of my very first bass (which was truly a piece of crap, but there is some nostalgia there anyway).

This bass will be a player and I am just its caretaker for awhile. If it turns out that I do not play it someone else will surely come along to take care of it.

Beauty of a bass! I have an early 59 (date is 2/59, serial #is 36073) with maple neck. Best as I recall from the Fender bass book, they came out with the rosewood option mid-year.

Enjoy it and play the hell out of it! Have been playing mine for almost 50 years and still makes me smile every time I pick it up.

whats the back profile on the neck like?
just curious as there is a '63 p at a shop here that has been played to hell, the neck has a nice d shape to it (reminds me of an upright bass neck). feels so nice, might try to duplicate that profile on the next build i do...

The neck is very wide at the nut, likely 1-3/4", but very narrow front to back. I compared it to my Squier CV Precision and the Fender neck looked to be about 1/8" more narrow front to back than the Squier neck.

Here is a photo but it looks to be thicker than it actually is.

Original pickguard.

Not sure on the body wood, read online somewhere that Fender was using Alder at the time. The grain on the backside though does look a little Ash like to me. Does anyone know how to tell for sure?

That pickguard has held up extremely well. Would be cool to see a close up shot of the tort pattern on it.

It looks like ash to me, but I'm not an expert by any means. I have a alder P bass (1963) and an Ash telle, both Sunburst, so I'm going off that reference with respect to the grain lines in the wood.

The bass is all orig, including the pickguard. It's the bees knees, no doubt.
