I think I'm saving up for one.
Money has been tight lately, but a bass like this would be worth it. The only thing I'd change would be the strings...I'm a tapewound guy from now on.
I've seen some of these for around a grand, not quite as nice as the OP's but still a lot better than plenty of basses in that price range.

They have a similar model at my local store but in Black with Ivory binding and White Pearloid Inlays for the price of an American Standard Jazz. It is hands down the most perfectly built Jazz bass I've played.

Gigged her for the first time last night. All I can say is wow! As many of you know, I've owned nearly every big name builder bass out there. This can hang with pretty much anything in terms of build quality, playability and most importantly, tone.
After our sound check, my guitarist grabbed me and said "I really, really like the tone of that bass".
Has just the right amount of growl and burp. Sounds very full without being muddy at all. The notes on the D and G strings carry a lot of weight and punch but, are not thin or muddy. I was so in love with the tone the whole night that I completely forgot to put it in "boost mode" and try that live. I think that I have a new #1. It's that damn good!

That neck binding is so awesome. I would buy it for that alone....
Beautiful bass. Bacchus is by far the best bang for the buck. I own 2 of their handmade series basses. The woodland 4 in urushi finish, passive 8 lbs 5 oz, and a woodland 5 in all natural oil finish and maple neck, active with bartolini preamp at 9 lbs 9 oz.
Ordered both from VSN Guitars right here in Canada. Received them both within days without having to order from Japan and deal with currency conversions, customs etc.
What can i say, i decided to sell all my other basses.

There's a guy on here who can help you order a Bacchus or STR and get it exactly the way you want, his handle is steweDbass I think (or very close). He has some posts in the 'STR Lounge' thread

The binding on the neck alone is almost enough to make me buy this bass. Wow.

Just picked a similar one today, but a 5-string version. I compared against a couple of my basses; 2 Foderas, one Fender CS and an US MTD. It was not lacking in anyway. Just as good. Joints, fit and finish, all on par. In fact, compared to the Fender CS, it was noticeably lighter, given that is is a 5-stringer.
The only thing that one needs to be aware of is that while the Japanese made ones are absolutely superb and can hang with almost any builder in terms of quality, they also have budget line basses built elsewhere (in the Philippines I believe). I can't speak to the quality of those. Only the Japanese made instruments.
