I would spend £250 on certain lawsuit counterfeit’s from the 70’s, especially if I knew what a £ was.

I was prepared for that £250 to get me absolutely nothing at all. It was money I was prepared to lose, ultimately. It isn't a dead loss as I fully think I can convert this into a usable instrument with enough time, effort and resources.
Perhaps £ is the international symbol for counterfeit currency? In which case, OP definitely got the better end of the deal...

I think we live in an era where £250 gets you the most bass for your money, if you are buying new.
Not the lightest, not the heaviest. It balances surprisingly well for a bass with a small body and the upper strap button hovering over the 24th fret. The mass is there in the body.
I tried a reissue a few years ago and I can't remember anything about it.
I ain't mad at 'cha.
One of my favorite things in life is modding basses.

I bought an authentic Brubaker bass made in China with all those. ills. It took a complete re-engineering, as the neck could not be shimmed in a traditional manner. Mismatched screws, pickguard sanded down to fit fretboard overhang.
I looked at it as a test of my determination, and it's pretty good now.

I used to have one of those Dan Armstrong basses. I told my friend about it , he gave me the Stanley Clark issue of Guitar Player because the Dan Armstrong bass was featured in the Rare Bird column. Anyway, what I loved about that bass more than anything else was the flame maple neck. The pics shown here dont focus on the neck, Im assuming it doesnt have a remarkable neck.
Posting that tidbit online in a public forum is a stroke of genius. No one would ever suspect it's authentic.
I have a 1970 DA/Ampeg. It's heavy, it plays really well, and I don't mind the Dano-style bridge. (It's my understanding that due to the lack of height adjustability, they originally shipped with three bridges of differing height. I only have the one, but it's the right one.) Sometimes it sounds great, and there were times it was my main bass. It hasn't seen much use lately, though, in my jazz band.
Perhaps not so much that it is made in China. More so the factory is not QC'ed by a reputable brand. Thats the difference between an Epiphone and a Epi(c) rip off
