Yessir. Nailed that.
And what with the interwebz today, it's not just one first impression, as two threads about this demonstrate.

Moot point. When I've bought brand new instruments they were...brand new. After hundreds of gigs they have plenty of wear - but *I* put the wear on them, not an unholy alliance of cardboard box and shipping guy compounded by a "not good with details" middleman.

I keep coming back to what shocks me - sweat the details on the swag but ignore the basics. Boggles my mind...

You only get one chance at a first impression.

So, when do we get to hear about the "other" issues with bass #1, apart from the missing foam wrapper?

Y'know, the secret ones that were "alluded" to by the OP, but didn't want to say outright, until resolution was reached.

Patience. I may not even get into it. I looked at some of the other basses on the new website. The couple I looked at didn't have the issues mine had so it's possible they really were one-offs. I'll look through the rest and see.

Besides, I think you answered your own question. :)

Almost a month and still not done with it?

That sounds like an "issue" right there.

I've talked to Dan, we're in good shape. He had the body buffed so that should be fine now. The "other stuff" has been addressed. When I ordered the bass I had asked for a different pickguard so that is being made now. When that's ready he will ship the bass back.

I'm going OT, but G&L seems to be regarded mostly with apathy around here. Scroll down the list of threads and you'll see "G&L Club Part 7" followed by "Spector Club Part 78." I don't know what G&L is doing wrong, but their marketing/branding obviously isn't working. Perhaps they just need to change their name to something more "boutique-ish" to get the sales and recognition they probably deserve.
i think it's their headstock shape. lol!

What I've learned is that Dan is not that detail oriented. Wrong box, didn't use the wrap bag. Obvious stuff. To him, it's an instrument, not crystal. I pointed out that simply isn't an acceptable or shared viewpoint.

Wow...totally changed my views of this guy...as a business owner & customer contact point, you need to realize that your customers won't always share your viewpoints.

I had something similar happen when I received my custom ordered bass from another highly regarded custom builder, who's name rhymes with Ineeda Cocacola. The bass arrived (6 months after it was promised) with scuffs on the body and scratches all over the pickguard. Not a big deal, the scuffs can be buffed out and the pickguard was replaced, but when you pay for a new instrument, you expect (and deserve) a new instrument or a partial refund.

Does that mean something other than white? Is he going to offer Tort or other options?Jim

I had asked to get a mint guard. Along with that he is also having a parchment guard made and I'll see which one suits it better. If you ask he could probably have others made on request. But I don't know of anything else being offered as stock. At least at this point.

I looked through all the pics on the website and don't see the same issues mine had on the other basses, so that's good. One is visible in the pics of mine so my guess is that it left the factory that way.

It did hurt a bit to see them sitting on top of a hard case...

There are some really nice-looking paint jobs there.

Don't be too hurt. The case your bass is sitting on has a noticeable ding on it. In all the pictures. it is near the top edge of the case above the fifth fret. Symbolic, I guess.

JO010 an BG007 are sitting on the same case.

Edit: I think there is only one case. In some pics, the case is oriented 180 degrees from other pictures. When the handle is at the bottom of the pic, you can see the ding. When the handle is at the top of the pic, the body usually hides the ding.

Just the opposite for me. I think the G&L is a good looking headstock, and the Lakin looks like someone took a sander to a Fender.

Agreed, that headstock shows no regard for design from Mr. Lakin at all, I mean, if you're gonna copy a Fender, why don't think of an elegant headstock? Like Sadowsky, Valenti and many others did?
