At long last. Ordered this in Jan of 2021, and after waiting in the queue, having to have the neck remade twice, and a long delay in getting it shipped, it’s finally here. Here are the specs I ordered:
Custom Dunable R2 Bass
Pelham Blue finish
Swamp Ash Body
Maple neck with maple board and no binding (this was custom)
Black pickguard
2 - Vol 1 - Tone setup
Dunable Katana pickups
So far, I’ve only gotten to play through my headphone practice setup. I’ll take it to practice later in the week to run it through my main amp and see how it sits in the mix.
I feels really good to play. Satin nitro finish on the neck, and a semi gloss nitro on the body. The neck is very smooth, and the body actually has a touch of texture. However it doesn’t feel sticky or like your hand will catch on the finish.
The neck is similar to a jazz profile, fairly thin and fast all around. However I think the taper from the body to the nut is less than on Fender necks. Feels good to play, but I’m a Jazz/Ric guy.
The sound is hard to say, given I haven’t played it through my Orange rig yet. I got the Katana because they sounded great on the demo, and Dunable described them as similar to a Rickenbacker. I also thought the chrome covers looked great, so that was part of it. They do sound very Jazz/Ric like. And to my ear the bass is quite bright, perhaps a bit harsh but I wonder if the strings play into that partly. I’ll eventually put a set of Sunbeams on it.
I kinda feel like what I had built is a bit of a unicorn for what you’d normally see from Dunable on bass. Seems most guys who are buying are gonna for their TBird pickups or their Bampohet humbuckers. I have not seen any others with the Katanas in them, combined with the lack of binding and blocks on the neck, this is likely one of a kind for sure.
On my CS Jazz and my Ric 4003s, I favor the bridge pickup to get a brighter tone, and a bit more bite through the Orange. So far I’m favoring the neck pickup here, to tame the brightness and get a bit more bottom end. And I am not ruling out using both pups full out.
The jury is still out. I like it, it feels good, it plays well. Takes a little getting used to, but I’m staring to find my groove with it. So far I don’t think it surpasses my CS Jazz as my #1 bass, but it’s seeming a mighty good backup.
