I am giving it to Fodera because they expressed interest in it. Had they not, I wouldn't have gone through with buying it.

If I wanted to donate some basses, which I do, I have a few beginner basses that would be much better for that purpose.

For $350, I hope you have fun with it. I say you should open up your favorite $20 box of gen-ye-whine La Romanée Conti wine, and have a great evening with it. :)

And congrats to Fodera! Nothing says "I've made the big time" like having your work copied by forgers in China, no matter how crude their work.

I could see why Fodera is concerned, the gear geeks here on talkbass will know the difference, but talkbass =/= the entire bass community let alone musicians in general. If people (especially other musicians and bandleaders and producers) start to associate the general appearance of a Fodera with cheap basses that have noisy electronics, they will not be as receptive the genuine article. If no one wants to gig with a Fodera player, they switch basses. Fodera loses.

I hate to say this, but it doesn't offend me. Sorry Jason:hiding:. Like Showgirls and Transformers 1, it just is a bit too stupid to take seriously, and that saves me from being offended. It is a fun instrument that has surprising build quality and dead electronics that cost under $400. I don't even think it is worth getting upset about. I can understand why Fodera owners might find this upsetting though.

This has been an ongoing battle for a long time. I can remember in the 1970s that Ibanez first made inroads in the US with knockoffs of Gibson Thunderbirds, flying Vs, etc. Eventually they developed their own lines, but Gibson and Fender did keep a tight control on use of their designs, hence the "lawsuit" Ibanez and Fernandez basses. Even the much lauded SX Fender knock offs had to (or chose to ) change their headstock design so they weren't so much like the real deal.
As far why Fodera would be upset, I feel the same way when I find Teach Me Bass Guitar on a bit torrent site. The Learning Dock and I spent a lot of time, care and money to create the best product possible and it's frustrating to see it stolen and distributed. At least no one is profiting from it like these Chinese trading companies are with bad knockoffs. Bass guitars are the tip of the iceberg, how many times have we heard of fake Louis Vuitton bags, blue jeans or the like being confiscated by US Customs?

The funny thing is that those who might go out and buy one of the "knock offs" will probably NEVER be able to afford a real Fodera handmade bass. To be honest, I am looking to buy a Emperor Standard really soon (I have sold a lot of collected gear to be able to even do this), but I could never drop $8K+ for a custom Fodera. So, putting a Fodera logo on it bad idea, but body design and etc.....if it can be the next SX style build or mod then I say go for it. Make it work for you. I have bought several Brice, SX, and no-name basses over the years for really cheap, then went on ebay and bought a descent pre and pup's and only spent a total of around $250-$300 each and have had really nice playing and sounding basses.

P.S. I saw a Modulus knock off in the guitar section I might be buying.....just for kicks!

I´ll add somthing else.

I can see all kind of videos on youtube reviewing basses. Generally speaking, out of those video clips resolution (normally bad) you cannot know if it´s a cheap chinese copy or the real thing.

And normally if you judge the instrument by watching videos, and coincidence gives that you watch the knock off version videos, you may come to the conclusion that Fodera sounds like crap.

Nontheless, people that buy Fodera know already how a fodera is or should be....but still.

Just my 3 cents

That's true, but if someone told you it was a 'Johnson', made by some guy in Iowa for $1400 and this pic was all you saw of it, you might say, "that guy's Johnson looks like a Fodera". :) Granted, if you wanted a Fodera you wouldn't buy a Johnson, but some one might.

I think apart from the nasty butterfly inlay the bass looks adequate. You don't play the looks of course, but that is where the Chinese fakes put their effort, in the looks. I think the Polish ones alluded to earlier look (at least) like far superior basses than this Chinese example.

As an aside, I still think it is hilarious when people buy guitars, amps and effects based on a YouTube video generally played thru a computer speaker as big as a quarter.

I'm of the mindset that not a single person actually in the market for a Fodera will ever buy a $400 knockoff so I don't see how this will have any effect on their sales or peoples' opinion of the Fodera bass.

Unless, of course, someone were to create a blind test and the results were all over the map. Ya, know, have a luthier set up both a real and knockoff and have folks play them, then give their opinions.

Now that would interest me.

Once I get the electronics to work, I can throw up blind audio clips comparing the Fauxdera and any of my basses.
