NBD Fender Aerodyne Score

So I saw this on marketplace this morning for $550 w/Rumble 100 amp
I asked how much for just the Bass and they replied $300 and I pounced
According to the serial # its a 2002-2004 CIJ and its in mint condition
Seller said the pickups were upgraded long ago, didn't remember what kind
Came with SKB hard case, Levys strap w/locks and a really nice cable
And yes I am probably going to flip it :)

Good for you. She’s a beauty… When you say marketplace… Do you mean TalkBass classifieds or somewhere else? Thank you.

Yeah I think this is the 1st year of production for this model? These Japanese necks are definitely on par w/USA IMO
The Aerodyne was unveiled at the 2003 Winter NAMM show and hit wide distribution in 2004, so yours would've been produced somewhere between 2003 and 2004.

Are Aerodynes short scale or standard?
The vast majority of them were full-scalers, but there were some medium-scale models that had a J/J pickup configuration.

Congratulations on a super deal, and a very, very nice instrument to boot.

One thing puzzles me: your Aerodyne does not have the 'Stratocaster jack input' (like most export models seem to have), but it also does not have a pickguard (which you usually see the 'domestic' Japan models, with 'regular' jack inputs)...

I think this is something that only the first year of production models had in common? Also I believe these early models had smaller frets (later models have medium jumbo)

Yep.

Wikipedia confirms this:

The 'export model' is only available in black, with a matching black headstock facing, smoked chrome hardware and no pickguard. The neck features dot inlays, but only on the side; the fretboard has no markers on the front. There is cream binding that goes around the front perimeter of the body and newer instruments have a Stratocaster output jack while the earlier instruments have a quarter-inch jack mounted directly in the wood on top of the body.
