NBD - Holy Hollowbody !!

Just an FYI for anyone considering one of these beauties. I saw a TB thread that mentioned the Fender FB1225 gig bag fits these nicely, and that the RB Continental is a snug fit, but it works as well. I haven’t tried either one, but I’m looking for other case suggestions.

Like most of us, I learn, compare and research basses online quite a bit and I play as many different basses as I can get my hands on. But when it comes to Hollowbody basses, most shops have a limited selection and some shops don't carry any at all. Most of my friends and bass peers don't have one either. So I've been relying on input from national pros, local luthiers and online reviews/articles.

IMHO, Hollowbodys are a totally different animal from traditional, passive solid body basses. When I first played one, what I noticed immediately was the airy resonance and the lively low-mid "whump" a hollowbody bass provides. After sitting with one for awhile, I noticed that in the process of finding "my tone", my fingers and the instrument became one with each other. What I mean by that is, the input my fingers had on my tone / sound felt immediate, absolute and, after time and practice, sounded articulate.

I bought a 1973 Yamaha SA-75 after seeing/hearing Josh Homme play one in the movie Soundcity and it is a really cool instrument, but kinda one dimensional. Plus, a short scale bass is not my thing for a long gig. Soooooo, after a bit of research and playing quite a few of them, I took a flyer on this online gem - and I'm so glad I did.

It's Really, Really, Really got that old school articulation/vibe, and it's Really, Really, Really tonally versatile. Pardon my blather, but it's Really, Really, Really hard to "Curb My Enthusiasm" :D

BTW - It looks quite at home next to Bob's old bass, don't you think?

Seriously, I usually take my "new" basses to Mike Lull for an inspection/plek/set-up.

This bass was perfect right out of the UPS box. Rather remarkable. I'll post gig photos this weekend and report on how it fits in an early "Beatles-ish" band mix. In a rehearsal last night with an acoustic guitar, drums and 3 voices it just shined!

Very cool - I'm just becoming wise to the ways of the BodyHollow, myself. ;) It is a much more subtle vibe. The Barts in these Skylines have a nice pop which adds a bit more versatility with the tone.

I had this exact bass but in the burst. Loved it. I actually owned both the Korean version with the Barts and the newer Indonesian version with the ChiSonics. I liked the Barts better, at least comparing those two specific basses. This has the exact same electronics as the USA version of that era. Very versatile tone.

Congrats! They're really great basses! Love the red you have. You are correct that your color is not currently available on the newer Indonesian version, only the USA version.

Thanks 2t - I really like the contours on the back. They make it really comfortable to sing and play for live shows. Micheal Tobias still gets his name branded on the back of every headstock, so after 18 years the design is decidedly “Iconic” at this point :thumbsup:

Thanks TBear - it is inspiring me to be more nuanced in the way I approach playing a song. I think it’s because the HB resonance allows so many tonal flavors to shine through. The more I play it, the more reflexive I’ll be to using those different tones.

interesting, first time I've seen these, congrats on being so stoked with it, that you like it better than the Cassidy says a lot. I dig the looks of that body as much as I dislike the neck and especially their headstocks, but if it's magical then it becomes easy to love. still, I'd probably pop for a Torzal Twist replacement in a perfect world. that red is delicious, have fun!

Never played a Torzal but they look quite unique.
This bass practically plays itself. My Glaub is a super comfy 1.5” nut. The HB has a 1.6” nut and is just as comfy, but the profile is deeper/more U-shaped.
