NBD: Ibanez EHB1005MS Headless Multi-scale Bass

For what it’s worth, I keep a file around just for fret sprout. It’s an easy fix.
Still, I don't think I have the courage or the skill to do such thing even if I have the tools for it.

super cool - I pre-ordered an SR1105B (I just found out it was delayed a couple more months, which I'm extremely bummed over) that says comes with a premium gig bag, and I think this is the bag they're talking about...I haven't been able to find a bag with the part number mine ships with
Yeah, probably you'll get similar/comparable bag to the ones come with EHB series. Nothing worth premium if I may say so.

I thought the same thing...do you know, by any chance, if the basses that got delayed from March until May are going to stick to that schedule?

I really am interested in these. Any neckdive? I saw one review that had neckdive because the body was so light.

Also, would you describe the neck profile similar to other Ibanez such as the SR series? That’s what I’m used to.

If you're expecting an SR neck, you will be very disappointed. The neck on the EHB1005MS is on the fatter side, but not uncomfortable. It feels bigger than my AFR5WAP, and definitely not as small as a soundgear neck.

No, I don't have that knowledge. Sorry, couldn't help you on that topic...

I kinda remember seeing that video review also. But in my dictionary, that doesn't count as neck dive. IIRC, the reviewer let go the neck and it dove down, but he didn't do it when wearing the bass with a strap while standing. All basses of mine would be categorized to have neck dive by that definition, while in reality, even my heavy neck 7-string Ibanez basses don't have that symptom when I stand and wear any one of them with a strap.

As for the necks comparison, I don't have any "regular" SR series. My SR series are SRFF, SRF, SRC, SRAS, and SRH. So, I wouldn't know how does the EHB neck compared to SR series neck for sure.

The closest thing to a regular SR neck would be the one on my SRH505. The spec sheet says 45 mm width @ nut, 68 mm width @ 24th fret, 19.5 mm thickness @ 1st fret, 21.5 mm thickness @ 12th fret, and 305 mmR radius. Seems typical SR series neck. Compared to this one, using also the spec sheet, the EHB neck has the same thickness (or should I say the same thinness) on both 1st and 12 fret, and the same 45 mm width @ nut. But, it is wider at 24th fret, which is expected, since the EHB has wider 18 mm string spacing, as opposed to 16.5 mm on most regular SR series bass, and it is comparable to the neck of special SR series with 18 mm string spacing (SR2405W). And the other think is the radius. The EHB neck is flatter.

But in reality, I say the EHB neck feels slightly meatier, though it doesn't fall into chunky neck category. Probably because it is wider at the neck joint and has flatter radius.

From your description, the EHB neck sound pretty close to Yamaha trbx 5 string neck.

AFAIK, Yammy TRBX neck is more or less similar to Ibby BTB neck.

My main bass for the last 5 years is the BTB685SC, 5 strings also, but slightly wider string spacing (BTB is 19 mm vs. 18 mm on this EHB). The BTB neck feels bigger and thicker compared to EHB neck.

The Bart BH2 (and also previous gen BH1) are on the darker side. These have dual full blade coil inside, so it could tolerate various string spacings and angled installation.

Most would probably upgrade them to USA Bart CBC series pickups to gain more output on the high frequencies.

Some of you might have known in these last few years, I've made quite a few posts on TB telling you guys about the upcoming Ibanez basses for the following year, before each year ended. The last one was about Ibanez headless basses which I posted in September 2019 on the
Headless Club??? thread, which gathered some comments in positive manner as well as a few skeptical responses.

Well, the "rumor" finally came true. Ibanez began showing the new headless basses on its website right after the calendar turned into the new year. And seems these new headless basses have gathered quite a lot of positive responses.

Fast forward to yesterday, I finally received mine, one of Ibanez newest models for 2020: the EHB1005MS-SFM. The SFM stands for Sea Foam green Matte, which I didn't think I would ever get, as my first choice for the finish was the Black Flat (BKF).

It came in a gigbag. Yes, it is padded, but, I dare to say it gives very minimal protection. Very far from what I regarded as a high quality gigbag, at least when compared to Gruv Gear Gigblade 2 and a few Mono M80s gigbags which I normally use.

For sure it doesn't have a proper neck support. Inside, it is only equipped with a pair of velcro straps to secure the neck from banging around while being transported.

And lastly, I haven't got the chance to play it through an amp... It needs some proper setups first. For once, the factory setup string actions are rather high for my taste. Next, one of the bridge pickup screws came loose, which I have tighten, though haven't equalized the volume between the two pickups just yet (as I haven't plugged it in).

I also haven't tried putting on the included ramp, in between the pickups.

PSA recent guitar center email will get your $200 off on these. My code: s741b5m5cm6g8, which I will not use. I shopped this out and was able to get $250 off from a smaller shop dealer.

Changing the string spacing on a fanned fret bass will put the strings out of tune, no? It doesn't sound like a good feature for the multi scaled versions of this bass.
