A black pickguard is entirely predictable. The dark torté provides the perfect touch of elegant variation while remaining true to the theme.

But black pearloid would be more black...

I bought an inexpensive Harley Benton PBass and put some EMGs in it and strung it with DR Black Beauties (strung B-E-A-D). Painted the headstock and blacked out the fret markers. Put a black bridge cover on it and added satin black strap locks.
I left he gold logo of the EMGs and a dark tort pickguard to provide some contrast. I've seen a few "show me your black bass" posts here, so I thought I'd throw in.

Works for me. Black and Tort is classy and all my basses have black hardware.

You really need to use optical black paint to qualify as the "blackest". It absorbs visible (and non-visible) wavelengths, giving you an almost imperceptibly deep blackness.

Blackest would be gabon ebony body, neck, and fretboard, with conductive black paint in the cavities, black anodized frets, ebony pickup covers, black mother of pearl side dots, and vantablack pickguard.

Someone needs to make black fret wire.

If its nickel frets you can blacken them. I'd buy some fret wire, cut it to size, then blacken it. It would become distressed with use, but that would just add to the charm.

Well the pickguard isn't black so obviously not. I think you can even find some frets that are tinted dark too.

I'd suggest a dark blue pickguard - black and blue is more brutally black than black and red.

Or a deep, deep metallic purple that looks almost black. I've seen cars painted like that and they really stand out.

Stainless frets can be chemically blackened, but it would probably wear through pretty quick.

Good point about the wear. But assuming it doesn't flake off, the only wear spots would be where the strings actually touch the frets -- or where fingers touch the frets too, if finger wear would cause the black to wear through. Which means that even after some of the black had worn off the frets, the frets would mostly still be black.

Get rid of the pickguard or swap out for a black one, and install black frets and you're there.

I get that there's no such thing, but it needs a one ply tort guard. EMG logo and frets notwithstanding, it's all about a broad contrast of colour and texture. Skinny white border got no place in such a finish..

I have a small 150ml bottle of this stuff that I want to use on a future project bass. Just gotta figure out how I want to incorporate it.
