NBD!!! Modern Player Jazz V!!!

Anyone know if theres a drop in replacement for the pups, that will work with all the coil splitting options? Nordstrand fat stacks maybe?

Nordstrand Dual Coils would work awesomely; the Fat Stacks might not be what you're looking for.

The Fat Stacks aren't like typical dual coils. They're designed to be wired as a series humbucker, with the option of 'splitting' them into typical single coils; in series, owing to the fact that the coils are 45-degrees rotated from the straight-on typical humbucker, their tone is darker, and their output is low-ish (particularly compared to a typical series humbucker).

Speaking as someone who's currently using the Nordstrand (parallel) DC's: they'd be amazing for this. They're big and clear and can growl if you want them to. I've got mine set up for coil splitting to the outer coils (a la 70's J-bass) and they sound excellent like that.

Other thing to keep in mind: you can get the DC's in series if you want. I'm not sure they'd be ideal for a series/series, single/series, series/single, single/single style setup, however - the output would be pretty different between each setting.

This sounds like a Roscoe Beck except it uses a rotary pot instead if toggle switches to activate the coils.

The pickups look like the Bill Lawrence design pickups that Fender used on the Roscoe Beck and 5 string Am. Dlx. P-Bass (bridge)

If I could find a lighter one (9 to 10 lbs) I'd change the rotary pot to a three way rotary and add series/parallel/single coil switches for each pickup.......

At $600.00 this Bass is a screaming deal !!

oh yeah.... I'd add these: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I used a Bill Lawrence bridge pickup from a 5 string Am. Dlx. P-Bass. for this build.... you can see the similarity....

Btw, how does the B-string do? Quite allright? Not too floppy? Good, even tone?

Well, let me start with the fact that the stock strings are pretty light. I normally use 45-135 and these are 40-130 i'm pretty sure. I tune everything a 1/2 step down, so yes, with these lighter strings the B is a tad floppy. I'm going to switch to something with a higher tension to tighten things up.

Regarding the pickups, i'm not sure if these are the same design as the Roscoe Beck pups, but they do look awfully similar. The flexibility (without the standard passive J bass hum) is really awesome for a passive bass. Fender is onto something here (it's been awhile hasn't it? :p).

How was it before you tuned down?

I've been gassing for this bass since I first found it on Fender website. Just noticed on your photos that the bridge has Fender stamped into it. Is that a Badass bridge with the Fender logo? Has Fender bought out Badass?

It's fender's new Hi-Mass bridge. It does resemble a Badass. I've never owned a bass with one, so i can't compare it to an original.

I CAN say that the sustain is unreal. I'm a firm believer in through-body stringing adding to the sustain/tone, whatever you want to call it. i was skeptical about the top-load Fender/Badass Hi-Mass bridge, but i have no complaints. It's solid!

Aww man!! I think i may have to get these! I totally missed this when you posted it earlier. Out of curiosity have you gotten any yourself? I've never gone the phony inlay-make my bass look cool- route before!

Hey I ordered one Friday and im so curious, What it the compartment on the back of the bass? is it a Battery compartment?

No battery. I actually haven't even looked. I think it's more or less access to the jack components as the jack itself is countersunk into the body under the bottom corner.

In the pics the finish is totally clean, what you are seeing is dusties from my crappy case and i haven't taken the plastic off the back plate yet. One really cool thing i should add, the pickguard is super shiny once you take the plastic off. Nice touch!

I have the 4 string version and the one thing I wished fender had done was add push-pull pots for coil tapping. However the pick selector knob(?) is a pretty cool Idea and i prefer to not have my input jack on the face of my bass. Your bass makes me want to mod mine so I can do some coil tapping.
