NBD New Lull model prototype PJ5-24V

This isn't up on Mikes website yet, but it will be at some point. I have to admit, it's pretty cool to custom order a bass from Mike and have him say it will be a new model soon. This is my second Lull, and there is a reason I went back to him... they're amazing instruments and he's great to work with. period.

Here are some initial pics of the bass. I wanted a 24 fret ash/maple vintagesque PJ and he delivered big time. Don't cry over the painted ash. I wanted it to look more "industrial" and have the pickguard be the focal point. The paint is Tungsten Metallic. I can't wait to see one in natural, though.

How's it sound?

I'll write more later, but it has serious mojo. I'm floored by the P pup. Plays like a dream with a ton of dynamics. I'll do a vid review like the one in my sig sometime soon so y'all can hear it. I'm sick of typing and am going to go play.

enjoy

Great review of the fretless Lull on Youtube, looking forward to your review of this bass. This is a somewhat off-topic question, but you're getting a really good DI tone, how much does the Portico affect the tone of your bass? I know Neve consoles have a very refined 'sonic signature', but I don't know how much effect this actually has on a clean bass tone - would you say there's a drastic difference, or is it more of a subtle thing?

Gorgeous! Not enough color lately. Don't get me wrong, I love bursts, see-throughs and grains of all kinds but a nice solid/car color stands me still. I ordered a Sherwood green M4V from Mike 2 weeks ago. Looking forward to your review!

Thought I was going to see a Precision-bodied PJ24....that silver is still stunning though.

Yeah, I thought the name should be more like a M5-PJV. It would be really hard to make a P body that looked "right" with a 24 fret neck. The offset waist of a J style body lends itself to an extended fingerboard better. The color is a bit more grey than in the pics.

Thanks. The portico is a really strong DI. I mainly got it for the vari-phase and blend knobs. There are a ton of tones to find blending a mic'd up cab and the DI, and then yanking around on the phase alignment. All of this can be done in the computer after recording 2 channels, but I like finding one sound first sometimes. I just used it as a di for the vid, though. The silk button was off so there wasn't much (if at all) being changed sonically by the 5017. I think what you're hearing is a really good bass. ;)

Awesome looking bass! Looking forward to hearing how the P pup works in that more rear position.

Side note: is your fretless on rounds?

Yeah, I have rounds on the fretless. It's due for some TI flats soon. I think the P pup is in the most normal position it can be on a 35 inch bass. I haven't measured though.

You and Jerry are making me want to switch my M5V to a PJ setup. I love my passive Lull PJ so much already!

Congrats!

I think Jerry got to put a P pup in one of his M5V's because he has something like 45 of them. :)
