NBD: UPS Lost my Bass

Should have arrived last Thursday after two days intransit from Michigan to Connecticut and kind of sensed something was up when it stopped tracking after the first day. The seller (Reverb not Ebay) told me he did not actually see them attach the label at the UPS customer center, but we both agreed nobody would be that stupid, right? After two days of investigation and passing lots of info about the bass to UPS it appears to have (maybe) been found on its way to their lost and found in Utah with no label. I always print my own labels, but that is really lame by the UPS staffed Customer Center. You'd think that would be customer counter 101, peel the label and slap it on the box! The claims rep told me that even if its found, they sometimes disappear again. Seller and I are kind of waiting to see whether it tracks or just shows up. It was shipped last tuesday and reporting missing on Thursday (1-26) so the 8th day from missing I think is Friday 2-2 when I believe they will consider paying out on a claim (fully insured), but maybe not since its "found" though I've seen no proof. Seller has contacted them like once a day and even forwarded me an email from a mgr. at the shipping location saying they found it on its way to lost and found in Utah (they have another in Chicago, but that would be too easy) and they were going to get it routed back to me. Still no tracking and they say even if it gets a new number it will cross-reference from the original number. Since I'm not the shipper, nobody tells me much at UPS except they will get back to me so I'm kind of stuck at the moment. Its a nice 2001 Sting bass which I've been looking forward to, but the longer it takes and gets banged around in the cold, the more I'm wondering if I'm going to like it if and when it arrives in whatever condition. With a complete lack of urgency on UPS part, not sure if I should hang in there or start trying to get my money back. The seller has been great so far and not their fault.

It’s my understanding that as far as you are concerned, the responsibility to make sure the item arrives on a timely basis is with the seller regardless of with who, or what method is used, and oh BTW, has your money. Now the seller definitely has a beef with UPS and should be screaming “blue bloody butterballs” as he may be forced to return your money if the item is lost, and could get a negative rating. Of course you want this bass, and hopefully it’s in good condition and all will work out.

Make no mistake, the UPS claim check will be paid to the shipper, not you. I would make it very clear to the seller of any deadline you have, and when it is breached, you will expect an immediate reimbursement.

Weird! Right after I posted this, my "lost" tremolo bar shows up. Address sticker, everything on it, no reason for it to be delayed....it was just lost for a while. So looks like it may be late, may take a little longer, but it'll get to you. Hope it's soon for your bass op.

It's gotta be the will of our minds that gets our stuff to us, that last mile, or so... hope everything turns out ok, @mikecd1!

(It will, one way or another... right?)

This happened to me once before with a package. They finally found it about a week after it was scheduled to be delivered and it arrived at my house about a week and a half past the scheduled time. I was happy to finally receive my item but what even more irritated me is they just left it on my doorstep and they issued no sort of apology whatsoever for them losing it to begin with. I guess at least the box was not damaged like usual.

It happens. I’ve been ordering from big operations like Zounds and Sweetwater for years. But even coming from a shipper who knows what the score is can’t keep a carrier from getting creative.

Had a bass shipped to me with a Thursday ETA. Got an update late that day saying there was an issue and delivery would be delayed. Friday nada. Called them on Saturday. First call to them and they said it was returned to the shipper as undeliverable. I asked why.

First they said driver was unable to locate the address. I pointed out I got things from them all the time and my house was on a long established residential street which dated back to 1953. And the house number was plainly visible from the street per my town’s ordinance. So the person I was talking to asked if they could call back.

2pm and another person calls. Asks if my address is a business address in a multi tenant building. I tell them it’s just a single family house with a yard complete with grass lawn and a lamp post on a residential street. This person asks if they can call me back.

4:15pm another callback and another person. Asks where exactly in Stratford CT is my street. I tell her “nowhere.” You’re off the mark by about 15 miles because you’ve got the wrong town. Asks to call back.

4:45pm another call to confirm my address. My real address (in the correct town) matches what the shipping info they have says. Asks to call back.

4:50pm yet another call, again from a different person who tells me my item was returned to the shipper as undeliverable but couldn’t tell me why it was since their info matched my address. After 5 or so minutes of talking in circles it became obvious this person either didn’t have a clue about why this happened, or (more likely) did know but wasn’t about to tell me.

7:50pm my bass arrived on my front porch. No knock on the door. I had just looked out the front window and saw their truck in the middle of the street and their driver making a beeline back to it before taking off more quickly than they usually do.

Bass was in good shape and none the worse for the delay. The shipping label on the box had my correct address.

Next Monday around 9am I get a text informing me my package will be delivered by 8pm that day. Huh? But ok. Whatever.

Where I am, mail arrives between 3:00-3:30 and UPS and Fedex show up around 4:30-5:00. Mail truck swings by at 3:00 or thereabouts. No Fedex or UPS on my street today.

6pm receive text my package has been delivered.

Fine whatever.

Wednesday I get a call from somebody who identified herself as a manager for the carrier asking if I received my package. I said yes, and asked why she was calling. She told me it was because she showed I was filing a claim for a lost package. I told her I hadn’t filed a claim for anything and proceeded to tell her the whole story.

When I was done she heaved a long suffering sigh. She asked if I knew who I spoke to. I told her three different people, none of whom would give a name. She heaved another sigh. She then apologized for the mixup and we said good-bye.

Talk about drama. <eyeroll>

Hope it gets situated OP, talk about the sux.

I have noticed shipping going down the tubes the past few months. Long delays, erratic tracking, and more errors.

My cousin works for USPS and does side work for FedEx and UPS. He says that every year shipping demand goes up 20-30% and they have no way of keeping pace...yet they still want the money. He believes part of the problem is to keep up the demand they are outsourcing and contracting with other vendors to haul packages, at record levels. Not to say the regular employees cared more about ''their" packages, but probably a lot more than a contractor who is making a run.

I am going to start handwriting on the boxes delivery info and tracking number. Thanks for the suggestion.

I usually tape on my own label, maybe I should include one inside too. When I have used the mobile print option, I make sure the label is attached before leaving, and grab a receipt. Overall, we all put a lot of faith in this process. I am surprised how positive my experience has been.

Wow... this is why the human element fought back against Skynet... the machines, by themselves, weren't making enough mistakes...

... long live the machines...

... wait a sec.

you guys are killin me!.....
i have a bass on the way thats sposed to be delivered today....
now i'm worried!
Yeah, I guess we've all noticed a breakdown in shipping services lately. With the tilt in the earth and relative spin there's no way your bass could have gotten caught in that same space continuum causing packages to get misrouted so please let us know it arrives safely!

I've had issues with every shipper imaginable. UPS is usually reliable for me, but whenever there is an issue they suck to deal with. Lost and damaged items are pretty much a loss.
The various OTR trucking companies are the worst as far as damage, but we can usually get freight claims paid after a few months of back and forth.

Hope you get your bass.

Talked to a buddy of mine who handles claims investigations for one of the majors. He said he was just guessing, but what probably happened was my bass got loaded on the wrong truck at the receiving center. The driver probably didn't bother to look at the town name on the shipping label because it's the responsibility of the guys loading to put stuff on the correct local delivery truck. Most drivers just pay attention to the street address and whether or not a signature is required. So he or she probably never thought that maybe something got loaded on their truck by mistake. Then the driver looked at the street name and didn't recognize it (most drivers know their area pretty well), called the dispatcher (who couldn't find my street listed in the the town the driver was because it wasn't there) and told the driver to scan and code it "address unknown."

And once it was keyed in the system as undeliverable the comedy hour began. Once the truck got back, the dispatcher realized he dropped the ball and got it over to you pronto. Then the following Monday tried to do a fake delivery notification to cover his butt. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line somebody thought you were going to file a claim so they marked it for review and hence the phone call a few days later from a manager when they didn't hear from you...

Don't know if that's actually what happened, But my buddy has been at this for a number of years and has seen a lot. So it does check all the boxes.

I'm just glad you got it... regarding the big 3, you would think the increases in both parcel volume and shipping costs would put some money back into the 'system' (I think the tech is there, but procedure and protocols still have to be followed for it to work... by competent carbon based lifeforms), a little insurance for their customers, letting them know, 'Hey, we got this.'...

I'm not sure this is what's happening... anymore, when I order anything, I'm just happy it arrives intact... sometimes it works like magic, and sometimes it vexes like voodoo...

... is it getting hot in here?

I’ve had good luck with Fedex. Only one major delivery issue that was quickly resoved. UPS much the same although resolutions took longer. The USPS is great - except when they screw up. When that happens they circle the wagons and getting anything resembling an answer is a nonstarter. I’ve received a few notifications from the postal guys that something somebody sent me was irreparably damaged in transit, was disposed of, and therefore would not be delivered. Fortunately I was always able to go back to the seller and get things worked out with them since I never took delivery. So I didn’t lose any money. Had the shipment been delivered damaged it might have been another story

Update II -Bass arrived at my door at 9:30 Friday morning! Seems okay, but has a bunch of fret creep, quite possibly from ten days intransit, but it sounds great! Thanks to everyone for the good wishes. I'm now fiddling with everything including these two aftermarket saddles that I think might be made of bakelite? Seller said they were ceramic, but I've seen these on Ebay and thinking bakelite. The bass sounds nice and will sound better once I get it setup for me.
