NBD!

If I remember correctly, the Earthwood is super rare right? There just aren't that many around...I don't mean necessarily very expensive, I've never seen one in person.

Yeah, rare enough, they didn't make all that many, and a few of them probably ended up in fireplaces. :( This is the 6" deep body model, which was more common - there was also an original 8" deep body model, from what I've heard, and surviving examples of those are far rarer.

It's a pickup according to the description here:

Must be where bholder got it from

Yeah, they posted it several different places, there and eBay (which is what I used, but I did find the other listing when I googled for comparison - there was a near-mint one for only a few hundred more - I used that fact plus the mods to this one to talk the seller down a bit.

So nice to see a NDB that isn't the same-ol'-same-ol'! Those are cool basses!
I'm not 100% sure how or where I'd use them myself, but they're cool nonetheless!

Me neither, but I'm quite sure that summer afternoons on my back deck and at my friend's cabin down at the lake are on the list! :D Doo doo doo, lookin' out my back door!

And actually, any all-acoustic gig. Means not having to cart an amp around too, but of course, either one of these is more of a job to move than a regular ABG + small amp. Still, nice to be able to compete volume-wise, without electrical help.

Ernie's out of the box (have I mentioned that I HATE FOAM PACKING PEANUTS? My foyer is now about a foot deep in them!) and sounding great - even after spending a night out in a snowstorm, very nearly in tune, very playable, nice action - boom! I will say even with the shallower 6" deep body, it'll take some getting used to (and a very long strap when standing).

Time to see how the old girl is doing.

I've never seen anything like that 1937 dealio.
What is that?
Post some sound'vidoe of that, if you can. neato.

All I have on it was in the listing - 1937 Regal Bassoguitar. I think there was an ancient promo ad pic for it (from the time) out on google somewhere.

Now, believe me, I ain't braggin', but there's a guy...the owner of a music store here in our little town, who has an 8" deep Earthwood, and it is flawless. He told me that he found it at an estate sale. He also told me how much money he was planning to make by selling it. I offered him my truck ;), but he estimated that his guitar was worth twice that...please note the lack of smile.
He seems ok with me stopping by every month or so just to sit on his floor and play it for a few minutes. Yeah...it's THAT nice...
Congratulations!

Yeah - they are out there, but... ...I bet they're mostly either on "do not touch" display or packed away safely, rather than being played. And thanks. Makes me want to blow off the rest of the work day and play.

...and retirement looms... I can see the end of the tunnel from here...when every day is (to quote a friend of mine)
the kind of day when I can "blow off the rest of the work day and play"...Not that Earthwood, nor any of its brethren, but I do have some stuff I gotta play... :)

I hear ya! Not sure whether retirement is looming or not for me yet - depends on how long me & my corporate overlords can put up with each other.

The Regal is up and out of the box, and utterly dwarfs the Ernie, it's amazing. It is basically a full upright in ABG form, adjustable post rather than strap buttons, upright strings, kind of a hybrid bridge, and a lined fretless fingerboard, scale seems about upright, will measure. I'm half considering cross-posting it over in the doublebass forum as well.

The strings on it are beat, G is missing, A and D probably date back several decades, gut or fake gut, E is a somewhat newer metal-wrapped one. Sound is gorgeous, though the Ernie is actually far louder - that may change when I get new strings on it and set it up nice.

Edit: The Regal scale length measures to about 41".

I'm going to swap a newish set of strings (still junky strings) from my broken cheapo upright on to it. Off to the store for a fresh good set tomorrow.

Might I suggest Corelli 370 mediums on that Regal until you know how much string tension it can handle? Those or Velvet Blues would be very low tension and probably sound pretty cool, with the Corelli's being the brighter of the two. Just a thought.
