Why was the clock not stopped when the Wisconsin player ran out of bounds? Is it true that if he's hit and forced "backward" out of bounds, the clock keeps running?

It was stupid of WI to spike the ball on the last play of the game rather than run a play - they had the Ducks on their heels on the previous 2 plays.

Rose Bowl game annoyed me to no end. I just don't like watching that kind of football.

I kept expecting one of the coaches to wise up and just start onside kicking every time. The odds of a stop might well have been better, no?

Yeah, you'd think. To me there's something wrong in a college football game when both teams trade scores on each possession. It makes the offensive success suspect to me and as such I just can't enjoy it because you just assume that each score by one side will be followed up by a score on the other side.

I have to say, those Oregon cheerleaders are fun to look at. I wonder if it's required that they have to have a fake tan there? Not really joking on this one, because they're all way too dark for this time of year.

I'll go on record saying I liked Oregon's helmets. I thought they looked cool. Granted, I wouldn't want my team wearing them, but since that is their MO, it was pretty slick.

Also, I like the Rose Bowl. Heck, we sing about it in our fight song here at Bama, and we've won more Rose Bowls than any other team outside of the PAC/Big10 if I recall correctly, but I have to say that stadium looks so darn strange from any angle other than the overhead blimp. From the sideline camera I'd swear they were playing in a high school stadium.

I know what you mean. I really hope Oregon will tighten up that side of the team, they've actually had great defenses many other years -- by PAC standards at least!

Aww, they're all recruited from Southern Cal, just like the players. Or maybe they were coming off vacation in Baja or Maui, like many of my friends up here. In any case, Oregon has upped their on that part of the sidelines too.

In some of the overhead shots the mix of red and yellow sections looked a bit like a Rose, which was kinda cool, but that is a pretty strange looking stadium for sure.

It's because they called him down on forward progress, and he only went out of bounds after that. That was the explanation, anyway.

No idea why you would even consider a spike with 2 seconds left, since you can't see how close to the 1 second mark you have. I'm not sure I'd chance it with 3 seconds left...

Yeah, the overhead shots of the Rose Bowl always look fantastic since the stands stretch back so far and make that classic, slighly oval bowl. But from the field it just looks strange. Not meaning to dis' it in any kind of way. It just gives it a tiny feel on TV, and most stadiums look bigger on TV than they are in person.

+1 to all of this. LSU would have completely shut down OK St.s offense, and would have had their way with their defense.

Well, I wouldn't go that far myself. But I do think LSU would beat them by, say, 10-14 points. Allowing that many yards just doesn't make a case for the championship.

I guarantee if you guys were not SEC fans you'd be hating this bowl and the type of football (bad, boring, horrible offensive football) that Alabama and LSU play.

But I'd pick Alabama to beat OK St.

Someone should do a statistical search. How many teams that have won the national championship scored 9 points in a game during that year? How many teams that won the national championship gave up 590 yards in a game during that year? I'm not sure how many teams did the former, but I bet it's more than teams that did the latter--that's probably zero.

LSU is ranked 59th in total yards behind offensive juggernauts like Iowa State, Temple and Wyoming. Alabama is 42nd behind Hawaii, Cal and UCLA.

The only thing that I'd add to all this is that LSU and Bama's offensive rankings come from SEC play where defense is the toughest. Also, it's been proven pretty consistently that if you put the best non-SEC teams with those powerful offesnses up against a supposed mediocre SEC offensive team with a stout defense in a championship game, the SEC wins every time. Those high-powered offenses from other parts of the country suddently look easily dominated, while the SEC team's offense just executes business as usual.

It's really a tired argument at this point. All the other conferences have to do is shutup a win their games. OSU, Stanford, Boise St and Wisconsin all had a clearly discernable path to get in the game this year, and each of them pretty much blew it on a game they could have won if they only played a little bit better on defense. The coaches in those other conferences are the ones to blame because they keep squandering all their scholarships by loading up on offensive players. As soon as one of them learns to emphasize defense first, maybe things will change.
