NCAA Bracket Challenge

After the Sunday games, Brad jumped back over Fontaine to claim 3rd place.

Bigfatbass,
Good to see you back after barnstorming through the mid-south region. My son just got into RIT so I hope to catch a few Los Blancos shows over the next 4 years.

I can't believe that there has never been a all #1 seed Final Four, but no doubt these four teams can play and any are capable of winning the crown (even if one team, which shall remain nameless, squeeked by a #10 seed to get to this point.) ;)

I still like my Tar Heels, but Memphis made a good Texas team look not-so-good.

Memphis had to do some squeaking of their on to get by Mississippi State. :D

That #10 seed wasn't a #10 seed. That #10 seed was unleashing hot fury. Did you see what they did to Wisconsin? Theres only one word for that. Damn good basketball playin'.

I missed the celebration on Massachusetts' Street last night (basically downtown Lawrence). I had to study (had a test this morning at 8am :(). So they better win on Saturday, so I can get drunk and join the riot!

I'd say that UNC is going to win, but I can't. My g/f lives in the same building as the KU basketball players, so it would be traitorous to say they aren't going all the way. And I ain't no traitor.

Good point - King Kaufman, the sports writer at Salon.com did most of his column today about that. They could have easily been an 8 or even a 7; and that have played like a well-tuned 2 or 3.
http://www.salon.com/sports/col/kaufman/2008/03/31/monday/

Davidson lost to Carolina in the second game of the season by 4 points. Carolina had a 1 point lead with 1:22 to go and the game was back-and-forth all the way. I didn't watch the game, but something that close could have easily gone either way.

Kansas - UNC will be a good game, but for the safety of the fine students at Kansas, it looks as though a Kansas loss would better serve the common good and prevent needless property and brain cell damage. :D

:D I saw a car almost get turned over when we won in 2003. It was crazy. Its like these kids had never seen a final four before :D :rollno:

edited for consistancy.
I was a sophomore in 2003 (Yeah, I'm what you could call a career student).

I hope yous guys aren't still pulling for UNC.

UNC has had it easy up till now. They haven't played my hawks. Please, keep listening to ESPN, those Mizzou fans have it out for KU, and they will love for you to think that UNC is going to win. But the fact of the matter is that KU is going to the BIG dance and she's gonna be prom queen.

Y'all UNC fans are going to have to eat some sour grapes come saturday. But don't worry, I'll take pictures on mass st so that you can understand how Lawrence drops it down when we bring home the bacon.

In other words:

UNC = OVERRATED. Hope you don't got cash on them. Sorry dudes.

Ahh, the return of my solid waste speaking friend from the plains.

I can't talk for the others; but when you attend a university, even if only for graduate school, I think the honorable thing to do is to continue to root for that team no matter who they may be playing (with the exception of your undergrad school).

"UNC has had it easy up till now. They haven't played my hawks."

That is a fine (maybe even inspired) bit of trash talk as you not only disparage the mighty Tar Heels and elevate the Jayhawks, but you poop on the tough Washington State Cougars (and thier cool logo) and the mighty Cardinals of Louisville. Well-played!

But oh so wrong. Kansas has had the easier path the Final Four. UNC needed to beat a 9 (Kentucky), 4 (Washington State) , and a 3 (Louisville - 2nd best team in the Big East) - it doesn't get much more difficult for a 1 seed.
Kansas? They beat an 8, 12 (Villanova - the 7th best team in the Big East) and a 10 (Davidson - which before the tournament some thought should be seeded higher but no one would suggest they were comparable to a 3 like Louisville.)

Prom queen? Interesting choice of metaphors for a men's basketball team. In Massachusetts, no one would think twice about that, but I was under the impression that Kansas was a little more straight-laced. Good to hear that Kansas is starting to let its freak flag fly.

Sour grapes? Don't think that fits either. I really don't see myself saying "Gee, winning the national championship is not what it is all cracked up to be. I mean you have to watch another game...) Perhaps, you meant Humble Pie (its not just a hard rock supergroup).

Bacon? MMMM, bacon. I like bacon.

:D

Kansas and Memphis sure played like champions tonight. Should be an interesting game on Monday. I am sure that Memphis can beat the Kansas team that played Davidson, I don't think they could beat the Kansas team that played UNC tonight. It may come down to which Kansas team shows up.

I like how the guys came back after halftime, but Kansas was clicking on all cylinders and it was not to be this time.

Did anyone else thing that Roy Williams tie had the same bad karma as Bill Belichek's red hoodie in the Super Bowl?

Brad is back on top and with a Kansas win would take the Talk Bass crown. Bigfatbass also has Kansas and would be in second place with a Kansas win or third if they lose. Atoz has Memphis and is close enough to overtake Brad should Memphis prevail.

Mmmm.. It took KU what, like 5 minutes to dismantle and dominate the Tar Heels?

I'm sorry I said KU by 5. I meant KU by 20.

Like I said, hope youse guys didn't put any cash down on UNC.

BTW: I got the pics from Mass St. It was kind of scary after a while.

It took 1 minute to gain a lead that they would not give up. But are suggesting that the game was over after 5 minutes? There was no doubt that Kansas was firing on all cylinders and their first 15 minutes was the best performance I can recall. I'm not sure that the next 15 minutes were KU's finest when a 28 point lead turned into 4. But Kansas pulled away at the end and earned the victory going away - there was no doubt as to who was the better team last night.

You know the rule - no pics, no Mass St.

You ready for this tonight? If the jayhawks win I'm going to keep this thread bumped with lots of poop talking.

'course if they lose this thread will hopefully sink into non-existance :ninja::o

BTW pics are coming as soon as the g/f can find the USB cable.

Lets see. ROCK CHALK #1. Jayhawks brought home the bacon. Who called it? Oh thats right. Yall thought I was crazy to say my rock chalk KU JAYHAWKS would go all the way. But lo and behold, she went to the big dance, she got the crown. You can't say nothin because the Jayhawks are the best college hoops team in the nation.

Might I remind you about a lil thing called the Orange Bowl? Oh and the NCAA basketball championship.

ROCK CHALK JAYHAWKS, KU!!!!!!!

edit: Remember that depth thing I was talking about? Yeah, it got us balllllllsssssss deep.

The mighty Dangnewt Bracket of Doom has been submitted.

I really didn't follow college hoops too closely this year. I have my father-in-law's alma mater, Marquette going a little better than their seeding. Lest the old traditions fail, I have my grad school, UNC, taking the title.

Hey dude, I just gotta say, no matter how much poopers I talk, I still got love for UNC. If you look at my birth certificate, it says Chapell Hill, NC as the town I was born in. If KU couldn't make it, I would be all about the Tar Heels (I'm the one KU dude who doesn't have a grudge against Roy Williams). I'm glad UNC is your alma mater, because my boss's (a brilliant chemist, btw) alma mater is UNC. But the fact of the matter is I see the KU Jayhawks every day and I can't help but have Jayhawk pride. I hope you in particular made PHAT cash off your brackets (mostly because of the dufus BS I've been talking) and I'm glad you've been a good sport. UNC was the other school I applied to (and I got accepted to, I went to KU because of in-state tuition). I got nothing but love for Roy, and I'm the first Jayhawk to defend him (I understand the draw of Chapel Hill....you're 4 hours from the beach or the mountains). But you got to hand it to my Jayhawks. The played stellar basketball and they deserve the championship. You'll be happy to know that Bill Self is probably leaving KU because OU (I think its OU) offered him like $10,000,000 to coach and this is probably the last time you'll see a KU NCAA champ.

BTW, I think I drank myself to the point I'm deserving of the name "Stupid Baby".

PS: I almost got my arse wupped like three times tonight. One because this drunk lady thought I was saying something mean to her, second because a dude who was too drunk (I sat down with him and started talking about the rock chalk jayhawks) was trying to be cool and thought he could start a fight, and third because of a mizzou fan didn't like my shirt (its totally inappropriate). I defused the mizzou siteation by talking about how awsome the KC Chiefs are (fire Carl Peterson). But that one chick...even free booze couldn't make her not hate me. What did I do? :(

Actually Brad and I both called the it as well. Brad even had Kansas beating memphis in the final.

These two things live up to the hype. Especially this year - it was a great tournament and a fun thread.

With only 7 official brackets we had 2 in the Top 2% and 5 in the Top 25.2% - both which are off the charts in terms of the odds. M.Dimon and I did our part on the low end.

We also had some inspired trash talking straight from the white hot center of Jayhawk Country. I got to UNC the year after they won the championship with Jordan, Worthy and Perkins after being so close for so many years. I heard stories of what that celebration was like - I can only imagine that is what KU is like now.

Other than the Benjamins (and of course ole Ben can be quite persuasive) I don't see going from KU to OSU in hoops.

KU along with UNC, UCLA, Kentucky, Duke and Indiana are the most storied college hoops programs where you do not tend to leave voluntarily with the rare exception of a lateral move like Williams from KU to UNC.

I'm #2 I'm #2!

Also, finished third in my local pool with the same sheet, only 18 people picked Kansas out of like 300 brackets. Chalk heads gettin' no 'speck!

GREAT to see Callipari lose like that, too. His big man on the bench, his biggest man sitting at home feeling shame, and a series of bonked free-throws losing the game. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
