NCD - BNA Audio Greenboy Dually

Update - I figured that I should circle back around and give everyone an update.

Techically the honeymoon should be over but it isn't. Took the Statatory Grape Jazz to rehearsal last night. Wanted to pair it up with my new back amp, a Genz Benz Streamliner 900. I was concerned as I have read a few comments where a couple of TB'ers thought that the Jazz and the Genz were not a solid pairing.

Frankly, I found this to be absolutely untrue. I couldn't stand still to save my life, nor wipe the stupid grin off of my face. And yes, I did apologize to the band for doing my best Angus headbob all night. Sadly, I believe that this will be a chronic affliction. Thank goodness that the band prefer me to move around versus make a like statue or I'd get kicked to the curb.

We have been auditioning to add a second guitar player. Had a guy roll in with the customary Marshall stack and a heavy hand with both volume and his bass controls. Interestingly, in spite of him stomping around in my tonal ground (I must have more DOOM!), I maintained note for note clarity while he got lost in the mix.

While the Kilo and the Streamliner are very different amps, both pair extremely well with the Dually.

I have had a number people ask me if I have found anything I didn't care for. Being objective as I can, I have only found one challenge. Dynamics ! Specifically, how the cab responds to my touch or attack. Too dang well is the problem.

I have cheated attack technique for years by running light compression/limiting. I thought it was a good initial help tool back in the day as I began my journey from being a 100% pick player to fingerstyle. Until recently, I had no idea that it has become a crutch of sorts and I am now going cold turkey.

I tend to really dig in when I zone out in to pocket land. While grooving in the pocket, I fail to exercise control over being heavy handed. I get all fired up and dig in, versus maintaining the discipline of turning the amp up (God only knows that I have enough headroom) and playing with a lighter touch. So, I set the amp initially for good volume with light touch. Then I get all hopped up on the groove/pocket junk and start yanking. The speakers seem to respond to these nuances and almost magnify them. Then I am too loud and have to ease the volume back a bit.

The bottom line here is that I prefer the ability/freedom to have a broader range of volume control based solely on attack. I have improved but still have to remain cognizant of my ham fisted yanking when I am off in pocket land.

If you are like me, be prepared to work on your right hand technique while you quickly become adept at adjusting your volume on the bass.

Counter point for this is that I have greatly improved my ability to drive the pulse or ebb and flow of songs.

The bottom line is that I remain all hopped up on the Dually junk and still believe it to be some of the best money I have spent on gear.

The look of that cabinet alone forced a brown note on me.

A friend of mine, Jason Mattis has forced me to rethink right hand dynamics...he has that Rocco Prestia thing...now, when I'm learning a new tune or something I try to stay aware of right hand dynamics.

I think it's true that having a great sounding cab can be a mixed blessing, because you can hear EVERYTHING :hmm:

+1

Most of the time I play with my bass going into a channel strip, then power amp, into my fEARful. Nothing to mask my playing.

It gives me new things to work on...I have pretty good hand dynamics, but it's not like I've given it that much thought live...now I think about it more, and it's been fun trying to up my game...I have yet to find the downside of owning a great rig :)

Glad you're still loving your Dually! I'm still loving mine. The honeymoon phase never really ended, so I guess it's not really a honeymoon, just the best cab I've ever played ;)

We've made Dually's for customers but for a demo cab, we just have a Faital loaded BASSIC...it sounds awesome and I use it all the time...but once you hear a Dually...just so massive sounding...gotta build another demo cab :)
