Epi EB-0 with a pickup upgrade would be ideal. Jack Bruce and Chris White both used a Gibby EB-0.
Thought they both used EB-3s.

Jack used both an EB-3 and EB-0 i do believe. Gives you the same tone, ultimately, and provides a nice thumbrest in the form of the bridge pickup.
My Standell had cabinets with the amps mounted in them. There was a 300 watt amp in each 215 cab, and a pre-amp with the controls that stacked on top. It was quite a bass rig for it's day.

Worked flawlessly for many years of being dragged around the NW United States in all types of sub-zero weather.

I have never seen a more "trippy" bass than this one.

I've been asked to play in a 60's - 70's hippie-type band (ala Cream, Yardbirds, Hendrix, Zombies) kinda "acid rock". The thing is that the band wants to really get the "psychodelic" vibe, and I only have mostly modern type basses... so, I need some suggestions - cheaper is better - definitely no more than $700, 4 string, fretted.
Another thought is to modify my Squier Jazz with some interesting graphics. Any suggestions?
