Excellent choice but note that the vocals are quite challenging.
I didn’t think the mid-80's and newer alt/modern rock crowd was into slow dance ballads. That genre is defined by gothy/post-punk/angsty-grunge/emo/androgynous/glbtq youths. Not the touchy-feely left-over hippies that became 70’s era stoners slow dancing/groping to Freebird and Stairway to Heaven.
Clapton says he's thinking about retiring from touring. Maybe he's getting tired of playing it too?
He's also stopped playing Tears in Heaven. It's about his son, Conor, who fell to his death from a window in New York City in 1991. It's obviously a really traumatic event for him. What dad wouldn't have great difficulty playing that song?
If you want newer country, try In Case You Didn't Know by Brett Young. Just enough starts and stops to keep you from taking a nap on bass 
I'm available to play that song most weeknights near the Cincinnati area.

Used to be a staple in my setlist, for some reason this tune absolutely went over like gangbusters in Moscow...
It' not new- in fact very old-- but if it's for events/weddings/etc "Wonderful World" Louie Armstrong is a good substitute. And it still retains the word "wonderful" lol. For bars, not sure. I hate Wonderful Tonight too... couldn' come up with a more boring song for bass than that... like car mileage, I only have so many "Wonderful Tonights" in me before I won't start.
