Need some string suggestions!

They are $70 and dont even have great reviews on amazon.

I’d not give too much weight to Amazon reviews when it comes to music gear.

As far as TI goes, their strings are very low tension and have a fairly mellow tone compared to most rounds. You like it or you don’t. If you play with a heavier hand, like extremely low action, or are after an agressive sound, TI Jazz Rounds aren’t going to do it for you.

I personally think they sound and play great on most JBs. But that’s me. YMMV.

I keep going back to these.
And they are NOT stainless steel as the package states. Mr Smith himself replied to my inquiry as to the construction, they are "Nickle Iron. We use the stainless packages for them as we don't sell enough to make 10,000 specific packages. Sorry."
But they feel great and sound great, even after a couple years' use.

Im not really looking for anything in particular. Just looking for some new strings to try out. Open to anything really other than flats, and no rotosounds. Haven't had good experiences with them.

Can you explain your bad experience with the Rotos?

I still to this day maintain that Rotosound had a bad batch in the mid 90's that sounded dull and lifeless right out of the package (and thus, my brief 5-6 year flirtation with Dean Markley Blue Steels).

When I went back to Rotos (100-80-60-40), it was like night and day. Never (to date) had a single or pack that was bad.

That being said, and if you truly don't want to go Rotosound, I highly recommend Blue Steels.

Those Ziko sound pretty good, Chinese imports, first I am hearing of them, I can only find them in extra light both 4 and 5...hows the longevity and tension on them in your opinion?

They are pretty tight for that gauge, do not take too long to break in either. As for them going dead, I've heard that they last a good month

Thanks. A whole month huh...well they are 1/3 the cost ($8 on the 'bay) of the NYXLs (my faves) so I guess this is a case where you get what you pay for...

If you liked the 'sound' (and feel) of Rotos, I'd highly recommend Marcus Miller signature Dunlop Super Brights. Similar sound to the strings but better longevity.
OP, you may want to come back with an artist who's tone you like and we may be able to make better suggestions.

DR Hi-Beams and Lo-Riders have been the longest lasting (in terms of keeping their brightness) strings I've ever used....and I've tried many. The tone is fantastic on them IMO, it's also interesting how much bass they have for how bright they stay.

Try the Pro Steels. Last quite a long time and have great clarity/punch. If you think they are a bit bright, just roll back your tone knob a bit.

How long is not long at all ? It could be when they loose the "zing" or when they're dead (in my book, which may be just broken in for others' books). I found that d'Addarios nickel and Ernie Ball Slinkies were dead (for me) after 4 months at 1 hr per day (thus not long, again in my book). I switched to SS strings : Dunlop SBs (MM or not) and DR Fat Beams. Far better tone once the zing is gone (not particularly looking for it), last longer (much longer).

You want long lasting, zingy strings, try D'Addarrio but try the Pro Steels. Love them. Stay zingy and bright for a long time IME.

Those go dead hella quick for me. Like it only took 3 days for those to be dead and lifeless. But that could just be for me.

I like strings that are/have a supple feel, since you don't like flatwounds ( i really like TI Flats ), I'd suggest Sunbeams, they have a nice feel to them and have a warm tone to them, I say this, as I have a couple bass strung with Sunbeams

For everyday playing and practicing, I like Elixir Strings. They aren't 100% bright right out of the box, but they last a very long time. For recording, I prefer DR Round Core Strings. It is kind of a pain to do a full setup before recording, but it's worth it. DR Strings sound great, but as others have noted, they die pretty quickly. Well, for me they do.

I have been playing since 1968 … many basses and many different strings ….

The Daddario super lights are my favorites
