neoX212 vs dual neoX112's

First rehearsal with the NeoPak + 2 Neox112t's last night with the blues band. I was playing my '62 Reissue Pbass that has become my main bass with this gig. This was a pretty quiet rehearsal, as we had a fill-in drummer who was using brushes. Still a loud guitar and keys, but nothing like the volume we usually play at. I ended up setting the NeoPak as follows:

tube gain: noon
pre volume: 11:00
low eq: noon
mid boost: 1:30
mid freq: 9:00
treble eq: 10:00
master: 9:00

Tweeters on both cabs are still set to 25% on.

The tone was what I've been coming to expect from this setup, punchy, warm, and deep, but with a lot of clarity. Very subtle changes to the passive tone knob on my P came through perfectly, which is great when I roll off the tone knob for tunes like Ray LaMontagne's "Three More Days" and some Reggae that we throw in.

I'm loving this, and so is the band leader. I may have to use this from here on out, even though I love the Shuttle ministack (3.0-10t combo + stl10t extension). It just gets a great "old school thump, with modern clarity". It's really making me think about grabbing a Shuttle 6.0, and having my small rig be a single Neox112t plus the 6.0, rather than the ministack. Although, I'll probably just use the NeoPak and a single 112 first to see if that's enough juice. It probably is ... I've used it with two guitars and drums in a Scofield-ish fusion combo before, with no PA.

I have two gigs this weekend where I'll be playing this setup, so I'll post some further thoughts soon.

Yes it does... the 112's are the big fat bomb. I just set up for my gig tonight at a place called "Rock's"... so it is the dual 112's but with the 1200 on top. Must rock, the sign promises it.

I ordered my second 112 yesterday... til it gets here I'll use the 212, but then....... decisions, decisions, LOL!!!!!

Okay, I had two gigs the last two nights with the blues band. Here's the reviews:

Friday was in a good sized room, and was the loudest gig I've played with this band. We had a new drummer that we'd never played with before ... we got together a couple of hours before the gig and ran through things. He's loud and very solid ... we clicked in very quickly, which was a relief. I played the NeoPak into 2 x Neox112t, as I said I would. Wow ... this thing thumps. The NeoPak settings I ended up with were very similar to what I used in the rehearsal, but a couple of things changed:

tube gain: 11:00
pre volume: noon
low eq: noon
mid boost: 1:30
mid freq: 9:00
treble eq: 10:00
master: 1:00

As you can see, I did clean things up just slightly by reducing the tube gain and increasing the pre volume, but it was a very subtle tweak. We could all hear the bass extremely well, and we all really liked the tone.

Tonight was back to a club where we play every other Saturday. Recently I'd been using the Shuttle 3.0-10t + extension, but tonight I decided to use the NeoPak and a single Neox112t, which I've used in a fusion trio but never with the blues band. I wondered if the NeoPak's 225 watts at 8 ohms would be enough with a single 12, especially with the louder drummer (same guy as Friday night). I did have the second Neox112t in the trunk just in case. I didn't need it. I was really impressed, and I think that this is going to be the smaller gig setup for now, rather than the ministack. The cabinet, head and bass just seem made for each other. The tone was nearly identical to Friday night's, only a bit quieter. The only change I made was to back the master to about 11:00. After the gig, the drummer commented on how well he'd heard the bass, and the keyboardist said it was the best he's ever been able to hear me.

So, I pretty much stand by my thoughts from the rehearsal: this cab / head setup is punchy and warm, but with a ton of clarity. For blues especially, I really can't imagine a better sound than my '62 Reissue P into this head with one or two Neox112t's. I do want to try the Neox212t on a louder gig as well to be able to compare things more thoroughly.

Oh, and both shows were recorded, so hopefully I'll end up with some tracks from each gig for reference.

You guys have me interested in this setup. I currently have both a GBE600 and NeoPak 3.5. Cabs are Schroeder 1212L and 1210L. Although the Schroeders are great cabs, super portable (neck injury-so weight is a major issue with me), and cut through in a rock setting (I play in a metal tribute/hard rock band with two marshall half stacks going for the guitarists), it sounds like the GB cabs really put out some low end. Even though I could run both my cabs with 4 speakers, I get the impression that I might get more low end out of 2 of the GB 112's.

I tried the 3.0 with my 212 Neox and it was a great sound... got all 300 watts out of the head and was an impressive for that small an amp... these things have got to be extremely under-rated!! The 212 opens up more with more power, but the little guy sounded really nice.

I went with the dual 112's, and it's working out great for me. Yeah, it's a great sounding rig, but it also fits into the car I just started driving a couple of weeks ago. No way I could have done the same with my two Eden cabs and 66-lb rack.

Actually, I wouldn't even be able to load the single GB 212 cab into this trunk, because the metal trunk latch hook at the bottom of the trunk opening sticks up into the opening just enough to be a bottleneck. The 112's fit because I can ease them into the opening on either side of the metal hook.

It's a perfect solution for me.

Cool! 2 Neox112's fits very well in my '07 Honda Civic trunk as well. But the Neox212t also fits the Civic trunk perfectly, which is cool. I still need to take pics of my car loaded up for a loud doubling gig. Electric basses in the floorboard behind the seats, front passenger seat completely reclined with upright bass in it, and cabs and amp in the trunk. And for a really loud one, I have the Neox212 and GBE600 in the trunk, and a Neox112t in the driver-side rear seat. Big fun!
