Jersey is a real poo hole for the pay to play deal...
We have many bars that were made famous by Springsteen, Bon Jovi, South Side Johnny, Sinatra, and the Rat Pack... So it didn't take long for the venues to realize that fans were coming by bus load, just to say "I was there". So now they all charge the band to play.
These dumb ass kids here run around proud saying, "we played the Stone Pony". To which I reply, "Nice. How much did they charge you?".

The fact that your band sold all of the tickets asked to sell, I would not have paid the promoter right off, and talked it over. Seems like there was a breach of contract by the promoter based on the details you furnished.
The promoter sounds like a scammer. It's the job of a promoter to sell tickets, not the talent. The talent follows up the promoter with performing their talent.

Yeah, I'd have absolutely refused to PAY another dime to the promoter, given what the OP said about the crowd, etc.
I'd have said "I need to go get my checkbook guys.. I don't carry cash!!" and kept on going!
I’d say: “Your sound guy damaged my hearing. Who’s your insurance company?”
I'd rather play a friend's BBQ where everyone is smashed and not listening. Pay to play just embodies the problems with the music industry.
And it will continue to thrive until bands learn how to become better businessmen. You don't need to be able to read music to play rock and roll but you damn sure should know how to read a contract or booking agreement.

Oh so NOW people are clueing in to our method of booking.... Don't be desparate. Back yards and barns make great venues when you can make some scratch instead of being expected to pay to be seen on their stage!
