Never ever EVER ship to Canada using UPS

You can actually refuse to pay the brokerage fees? ****! I've got a pedal coming today, and I don't wanna pay **** for it! Thanks internet!

Yes, that's my experience with this ordeal. If you refuse to accept due to the fees, and the sender doesn't want to pay to have it sent back, they will waive the fees. You still have to pay the sales tax on the item though.

I had two basses shipped from US to Canada.

The first one (an Iceman Bass) I paid $400 for it, shipping from Washington state to Montreal $40, custom fees $125 :scowl:

The second (An Epi Thunderbird Elitist) paid $600 for it. Shipping from Arizona $40, custom fees $305  :bawl:

There must be a better way, all other shipping methods, USPS, Fedex etc, usually ends up much cheaper or sometimes no custom fees at all.

I sold a bass to a TBer in Canada, and he requested that I write 'customer is a broker' on the slip. Now I fully understand why. I don't know how to become a 'broker' but it seemed to have saved him alot of money...

How to become a broker? Write "customer is a broker" on the slip. I think another term for this would be "self-clearance".

I don't see any reason why the shipping companies need to charge excessive fees for a package to cross the border. Usually, the buyer is fully capable and willing to work with customs to pay any taxes and duties that may be due.

I suppose if USPS only charges 5 bucks, I'd let them take care of border clearance instead of me. Five dollars seems reasonable.

Here's a thread on importing double basses to Canada:

If YOU refuse to pay them, they'll charge any fees back to the sender and demand that he pay them. Beware!
I learned this from personal experience.
