New 6 strings from Rondo ($170)

but now I'm thinking of the 6-string soap bar...

That one has been tempting me quite a bit the last few days also.

Personally I'd get the one with the single-piece bridge and humbuckers. I prefer both those items over single coils and a two-piece bridge for a 6 string fretless. But your preference may be different than mine. Also I prefer a 6 string to a 5.

I just got the WOB 826 today (6-string) but cannot look at it & play with it because I'm going on vacation in 10 hrs...too much to do.
will be back in 10 days to frolic!!!

I never was a fan of "scratch and dent" stuff. I know it's only a small scratch on the fretboard...but in my eyes it would look like a gouging hole the size of a buick. :\

I just bought it. For some reason having that first "ding" makes me more comfortable. It's over with, and I can concentrate on just playing.

50something

84 Fender MIJ Precision
SX SJB-62 Bass
Douglas WPB-955T 5 String Fretless (on the way)
Olympia(Tacoma) OB-3CE acoustic bass

I was browsing the net, noticed a picture of urban jazz bassist Ron Pearson playing a 6 string. I had to look closer at the headstock to see what it was, low and behold, definately a Douglas.

Can't be too horrible of a bass then, right?

I had some nickel round XLs on there before the Chromes. I definitely started seeng some grooves in the fingerboard. Not a lot, but some. They didn't seem too bad.

I am wondering if they were maybe jsut some marks in some left over crud that was still there after I sanded the fingerboard (especially the edges). Alot of it might depend on how hard a touch the player has.

My first fretless, is rounds + rosewood an okay combo? I'm afria dof it eating away the board

Ahhh, this is another holy war topic. Like everything else, it really depends on what you want. Personally, I LIKE flats, and I REALLY like them on a fretless. Apparently some people don't like the tone of flats. Regular rounds WILL cut into a rosewood board. But if you don't like the sound of flats, tapewounds are a compromise (tone is closer to rounds than flats) and supposedly don't cut. I am trying my first set of Fender tapewounds on my SX SB-301 fretless, and they seem to be safer, but not MY first choice tonewise (again because I like flats on a fretless, I even have flats on one of my 2 SX SJB-75 4+1's).

Some people claim that regular roundwound wear is very slow, but it probably depends on how you play, how much vibrato you use, how hard you press etc. So, like many other things, in the end you will have to try and decide for yourself.

Hope this has helped. :(

I have a friend who plays a five string similar to this, and he absolutley loves it. For the money you can't beat it though, even if it is a piece of crap, you could probably put a little bit of money into it, and get yourself a real nice bass for less than you would pay for a nice one from the factory. I'd say go for it.
