NEW Acoustic 360/361

CL..I was never good with math or applied science..I just use my ears.. But hey..I own one and if I can buy another 35 plus year old 118-vh Sunn cab...vertically stacked..YOU'RE ON, younger brother!

I have had a sound man in a club refuse to let me run my horn, because he feared sound pressures from my cab would knock drinks into laps of patrons. I had him listen at sound check..assured him I used it for 'good..not evil'....gig went well..no spilled drinks..never turned my 370 above 2, with tones flat or minus...no heavy bottom eq'd.

You still get a 'win' for weight though...but mine doubles a lamp table..looks even better with lacework/ doilies..like my wife placed over my Marshall 1550!..ya gotta see it to believe it!

My fave trick when volume was an issue was to show bar manager my volume was @ 1.75 ..down from 2.0 and further, I would turn my cab backwards..facing the corner.. He agreed.. when that horn coupled with the corner..wrapped around the whole club and the room filled with bass.

But he was a man of his word..and I DID TURN DOWN.

Corner loading works for any cab.

CLARITY..I meant I would love to go up against a guitar stack..if I had a 408 cab...then threaten to turn up to 3.

The only thing better than (1) Sunn 118-vh is stacking (2) !

I actually have a 408 as well. I got it before the original 360 came along. It's a long story, to channel George a bit. It pushes a lot of air, but with a volume knob, I can't say whether it is louder or not. It sounded raspy and awful to my ears with an Acoustic 370 head, but sounds a lot better with the 320 that was intended to be used with it. I'm pretty sure it has been turned up past 3 on a few occasions, but those occasions were outside gigs with three loud guitar players, each of them with more power than necessary. The 320 got turned up to 4 or 5 or so. The new one has both gain and a master volume, so I can't say what setting is loud or not loud on it. For the time being, I have been using the master turned up and the gain turned down for the upright and the other way around for bass guitar. I don't recall either one making it to noon, ever. It works for me so far.

If there was room somewhere, it would be an interesting experiment to line 'em up along a wall for a comparison, but I don't have that much room and it would probably take time I don't feel like spending to do. Besides, the whole reason for any of these isn't what it sounds like on stage as much as it is what it sounds like in the whole venue.

The other possibility is to run them all at the same time. It could be done fairly easily. Then what would happen? It might be fun to find out, but I'm not prepared for the jail time.

408 Cabs are rare birds...only learned of them in recent years.

I have heard good reports of running them with 370..I never have seen or used one..only read the legends on our other site..

1 -408 is @ 2 ohms. Through a 370..it would achieve full power through a single cab, as opposed to (2) 4 ohm cabs...371.

First 361 that I was ever around easliy kept up against (2) full Marshall stacks...never turned above noon.

I did roadie work for a band in mid 70's. Bass player used Sunn Coliseum with (2) 1-18 cabs. HE NEVER turned above 2.0..against full 100 watt Marshall stack dimed out. To achieve same volume, my 370 was turned to 3.0

I didn't know the Sunn's EQ setting. 370 was set with 'factory suggestion' of 'Beatle' EQ..A 'prettier' tone, perhaps caused volume to be diminished.

Both brands are 'front loaded' , volume wise...noit gonna get much more after NOON other than more distortion, perhaps.

Brother OREN has a Sunn 118vh as well as 301's. Loves to run a 301 aNSD 118-VH with his 370..HEAVEN...

Some people like that sound. I thought the 370 sounded a lot like an SVT when you put the 370 through a 408. It has an underlying harshness that the 360/361 doesn't have. I prefer the 360's sound. Oddly enough, the 370 sounded amazing when I put it through an Ampeg speaker stack that was two cabinets. I don't remember what they were, but the whole assembly was about six feet tall. So, a 370 is a perfectly good amp, but I like others better.

Acoustic Control equipment seems to find me these days. I don't go looking for it, but it always seems to pop up right when I'm looking for some specific thing like a power amp for a PA or PA speakers. If it is rare, then I'm either lucky or unlucky, because it always seems to be around when I'm in the market. Maybe the gods of gear know that I'm the only idiot who will buy it, so they make sure it turns up at exactly the right time.

Once drowned out two Marshall stacks and two drummers in a medium sized hall. I turned the 360/361 up to 8 though. It sounded sweet no harshness.

While his didn't sound the same as a 360 my friend used his 370 head on an SVT cab for years.

He could drown out my Marshall Major head on a flatback SVT cab. Mine just sounded better. ;)
This led me to the Ampeg V4B cab with a Sunn 2000s head, Leslie 147 and the above mentioned Marshall 200w Major & SVT cab.

But for loud efficiency the Acoustic 360/361 was the shiz.
I regret not using a 4x12 slant front 50w Marshall bass cab with the Acoustic 360. I could have come out of the crossover output on the 361. This would have given me the front loaded presence, more sound right on stage and a little breakup.

It must be harder than we think. I guess. Anyway, Anybody who is out this way and wants to mess with one is welcome to send me a PM and try it. They aren't in stores, and they aren't everybody's idea of the perfect amp. That's the best I can do for anybody who is interested in finding out if they are what you want or not.

No it's pretty simple:

If in-house resources aren't available, just book 4 hours in a near by studio with decent acoustics and a good mic selection (e.g. RE20, M88, U47/U67/U87). Also book a versatile local session player. Put several mics close to the cab (HF horn, upper mouth, lower mouth), another couple e.g. 3 ft out and 6 ft out plus an ambience pair. Hook up the direct out. Track to 8 channels. Put up a video camera, too.

Ask the session cat to play grooves in various styles, e.g. Stax, Motown, JPJ, Jaco, Larry Graham, Marcus Miller. Maybe use a J-bass, a P-bass and a StingRay. Walk through the controls briefly. No display of monster chops needed or wanted.

Go home and listen. Decide what mic(s) to use. Pic maybe 4-5 representative clips of maybe 1 minute each to begin with (add more later if called for). Sync audio and video in a DAW of your choice. Possibly pay someone to do this. Encode and upload to YouTube. Put up audio in FLAC format at the homepage. Done. It could all be done in 2 days (or less if less ambitiuos). Cheaper than going exhibitions and running big ads.

This is most generous of you! In what state are you located?

BTW, perhaps we could even compile a list of people here that are willing to demo their rigs to TB:ers by appointment? I gather there must be more Acoustic USA users than you on board.

I was being a little ironic.

I'm in Seattle, Washington. I would certainly hope there's more than just me, but I don't know how many of 'em George has sold.

...I don't know how many of 'em George has sold.

That would be a nice number to learn, or at least to know that several have been made (beyond the demo/test units) and sold to real users, not just beta testers and endorsers. This is not an inexpensive amp, and there is much controversy surrounding it, so, who else owns and actually gigs with one?
