agedhorse@ once a upon a time posted on the subject. I think the bottom line is we bassists didn't buy a enough of them or were not demanding them. Besides and there is good money to be had selling integrated heads.
When a manufacturer puts a power amp in a cab, they give up potential revenue from not selling the pre amp and amp casing part of the equation. As you know from owning a pedal board, pre amps are not cheap.
But to your point, I would have no problem using powered cabs. They aren't exactly something new. Acoustic had them back in the 60s.
As far as I know, you can plug into the return of an effects loop and bypass the pre-amp that way. But at that point why spend so much on a head, if you don't use its preamp? Maybe another reason to get an affordable used head and focus money on a great cab.
With the cost required to get a powered cabinet into production, including the considerable cost of safety and EMC certification (if the manufacturer chooses to follow the rules) makes it a difficult proposition given the lack of demand in significant numbers. I built up several powered cabinet prototypes, but the demand simply isn’t enough (by a lot) to go any farther on the project.
Because of the economies of scale, the higher production volume of heads actually makes the heads and combos less expensive than a powered cabinet when the real costs are factored in.
....that's how we all feel sometimes as Andy is our technical conscience, and a good conscience is hard to ignore! Why is it every time I get an alert that you’ve guoted on one of my posts, I get a sinking feeling I’ve been called to the “Principal’s Office”? LOL!!!
It’s an opportunity to learn a little something that’s not common knowledge. it’s always your choice to ignore what we post, but much of what we post could be interesting if you give it a chance
(This comment isn’t for you, but those who really feel slighted which of course I’m not doing)

I've learned less in courses I paid for than I have from many of the posts by experts here on TB. There aren't lot of product areas/industries where you find people like we have on TB freely sharing their expert insights and experience with the user community. IMO it's worth noting and especially not taking for granted. It’s an opportunity to learn a little something that’s not common knowledge. Who makes those?I think I'll continue to use my eleven-pound Crazy8 and 21-pound Crazy88.![]()
That would likely be about C$3K here. Oi! That's waaaaaay too much for a mini stack.TH350 and 2 of these cabs
Subtotal $2,167.99
That’d be a sweet mini stack but at that price? Yikes
Who makes those?
My thoughts exactly!! On all their stuff!!Aguilar is another kind of beast, everybody noticed that sound, I receive kudos 95% my rig is engaged. My bass is now revealing all kind of subtleties before not even close of what I dreamed. Presence, delicacy, vibrancy and of all this thing has a price. 40+ years playing a bunch of amps, and basses at different venues and studios I never had founded before a system that fulfills my expectations.
