New ampeg speculation - A true B15 Reissue?

I'm not surprised at the speculation that Ampeg is planning to re-introduce an updated version of the B15 Portaflex. I used a B15S with an Altec 421 back in the '70's and it was one of the best sounding amps I've ever owned and especially useful in the studio. I have always regretted selling mine due to its' weight. I should have kept it to use in my practice room/home studio.

I wouldn't say it was the best sounding thing I've ever owned, but I will vouch for the weight - CRAZY heavy, and the most awkward lift imagineable if you were on your own.

I, too, would like to see them bring out something that Looks like that, was 50% lighter, and had 10x's the power.

Cheers,
Cameron

buncha wusses! "waaaahhh...it's too heavy for my little man body to handle! waaaaahhhh!"

:D

listen, the b-15n is for those who 30w is enough and who don't mind lifting a little more than a 110 neo/class d combo. and with over 160 members in the portaflex club on here, there seems to be a significant amount of people who fall into that category. make a b-15n 300w and it's no longer a b-15n...it's an svt.

ever lifted the BIG DADDY B15S on your own, with the Altec speaker that weighed about 25 lbs on it's own? The B15N was for wussies!

The amp in my Berg IP weighs 7 lbs...1,000 watts....you'd need 10 B15N's just to be heard a LITTLE ITSY BITSY BIT!

And you KNOW it's all in jest and love, my bass brother!

:D

Cheers,
Cameron

right...that's why i also have an svt/810.

in my main band, playing at that volume would get you s-canned. but what's funny is that i've seen videos of you and you're playing jazz and you can't be playing any louder than the b-15s will go. so where does all this talk of burying people with volume come into play? ;)

don't tell anyone, cam, but i've been known to bust out a crate power block with a vt deluxe in the effect return ;)

There's a gadzillion ROHS compliant cell phones, TVs, and computers around with no tin whisker problems, but they are all machine made.

Having said that, I can't solder with the lead-free stuff worth beans. It takes a higher heat. and extra clean and fluxed joints. Then I feel like putting on lacquer to prevent the whiskers which is just paranoid. If you have to sell to a world market you got no choice. Good news is leaded solder is not in short supply in the US for DIY

and deep, deep bass at low volumes. There is NO substitute for watts. Clean, deep, and ballsy, with dynamic range from HELL! That's what it's about. When that tubey compression kicks in that you dig so much and squashes your notes flat, my rig just gets louder and louder, all under control of my fingertips...

I heard my bass through a pair of 15" Genelecs with something like 2500 watts a side...just sickness, man.

Anthony Jackson's using about 5,000 watts at little jazz club gigs...

So my puny 1,000 watt IP's are just getting me in the ballpark.

Cheers,
Cameron

+1

Having a Mesa M9 Carbine has redefined my idea of head room—with its single channel of 900 watts into 4 ohms—much cleaner low end than one channel of my CA6. It is a live sound (through Epifani cabs) that I would never trade for a B-anything. :D

we should start a high watts club....

Headroom is intoxicating.

hey, i have plenty of headroom too! i can't even turn my b-15 up loud enough to distort when i use two cabs and can just barely do it when i have only one!

Hopefully the new B15 will also have a matching extension cab available as well...
will it be a deal breaker for me if they don't? probably not since i already have a couple. about the only thing that would be a deal breaker is pricing it out of my reach...and if they use those crap latches...and if they use a lame speaker...and if it has that lame dolly with no footcups...and if they don't make it a double baffle cab...and if it varies from 64 in the slightest ;)

this is gonna be Very interesting methinks. now, what would be super cool would be a powered extension cab, utilizing a plate amp (ala bag end/berg) but with matching b15 looks. you could then use the line out, strap a load resistor across the tube amp's output and then have the plate amp powering Both cabs for big volume situations, all while still using the amazing tube b15 tone stack. a nice compromise that would fill a lot of needs. now THAT would be something! heart be still...
