New Arrival - Roscoe Century Standard Plus 6 J (Koa/BEM)

I've been a bit surprised that this one hasn't move yet too. It's got to sound nice with that mahogany body and Bart/Bart combo.
I finally bit the bullet and plan on listing the Elrick 6 until it sells this time.
If this one is still available when it sells it'll be coming to Georgia.:)

Is there a big difference in sound between the soap bars and jazz pups?

Update: I listened to Jerry's Century 3006 J clips and SKB (soaps) clips on YOu Tube and I hear more mid from the soaps and I think more of a traditional "jazz" sound from the Century J.

Based on Jerry's clips, I think I prefer the jazz pups. Not surprising I guess as I have played jazz type basses for quite a while.

A "big" difference, no, not really; a difference, definitely.

To my ears, it's the "Roscoe sound", but a bit more "focused". I am getting to where I actually prefer the sound of the JJ equipped basses we make....all the huevos of a Roscoe, but with the added bonus of that cut from the JJ's.

In a word, yes. The J pickups sound different in and of themselves, and they're also placed in different spots relative to the strings which changes the nature of the vibrations that they perceive (thus the tone, too).

A Roscoe J can sound very much just like a j-bass (albeit a muscular one). The soapbars sound like what I think of as the typical Roscoe tone.

That's a good description I think. Focus is maybe the word I was looking for. I liked my SKB/Soapbar a lot, but there was something I wanted but couldn't quite get from it. It may have been this.

So maybe a Century J would be the compromise that I'm looking for. A little more traditional J sound but still Roscoe infused. The 35" scale effect (which didn't bother me as much on the SKB I had for a while as it did when I tried Lakland, Modulus and other 35" scale basses) will be lessened by the longer upper horn reaching almost to the 12th fret. Best B string and nicest playing neck in the business.

The J really intrigues me as I thought the soap bars didn't quite do it for me.

Decisions, decisions. My wife likes the top, I like the specs, and the price/value/bang for the buck is spot on. I don't need it, but the GAS is bad with all the talk of GTG's, Jimmy Haslip lessons and/or master classes, listening to Yellowjackets last night and being unable to do it on my jazz, urghh.

Steve, I can't see a real downside to this one - and that's not my "homer" speaking, this really IS a good one, and it fits what you're looking for, from what I've seen of your posts...

Hey Gard! I've been really busy with the new job and several home projects. Not much TB surfing going on.
I'm hoping to be able to slide into the GTG. It really depends on when my grandsons B-Day party is scheduled and the my better half. I think that i can lure Peggy there via Mount Airy (AKA Mayberry).

Also trying to work my way back into the admission ticket (AKA a Roscoe). :D

First off, you don't need an "admission ticket", this shindig will be open to all! Besides, you're JOE, you is FAMILY here. :)

Definitely try to make it, wouldn't be the same without you here man! :)

I think it may as well. I'm talking to Ryan to see if I can run by his place when I'm down there on Saturday as he has a pair of Century 5's - one soap and one jazz. I'm thinking that the "jazz" sound is more of what I'm looking for, but it might be nice to do a side-by-side in person to be sure.

IF I get a new bass, I don't know if I could afford to go to NC as well. :(

Well, we'd like to have you do BOTH, of course, but the bass would be my first choice - if I were you. You're sure to get years of happiness playing it!

I have survived many encounters with the White Coats. Even had the pleasure of leaving a few of them scratching their heads. ;)

Happy therapy is hanging with the Roscoeheads. We're all off kilter and somehow we're a cohesive unit. It's tough being the long haired, no talent adoptee.:hiding:

Tough choosing between a bass and this GTG. I'd bet either choice you'll be happy.
