You wouldn't get any hum with the P pickup soloed. Only with the J pickup soloed, I would think.
As for the neck, yeah, I can't comment on the PB4, as I've never played one. I know the SB4000 is fairly chunky front to back. I had just assumed that the PB4 used the SB4000 neck, but I guess this isn't the case? Not sure what to tell you about a PB4 neck.
For myself, I'm still going back and forth on this versus my Ibanez GWB35. I am liking the narrow string spacing of the Ibanez. But I still really like the PB5 as well. And the PB5 certainly has image in its favor, for the Nashville scene, lol. The GWB35 sounds great but I can't really say it looks the part in a blues band.
Not that I'm going to let that be the deciding factor.
