New Carvin P bass, about time?

You wouldn't get any hum with the P pickup soloed. Only with the J pickup soloed, I would think.

As for the neck, yeah, I can't comment on the PB4, as I've never played one. I know the SB4000 is fairly chunky front to back. I had just assumed that the PB4 used the SB4000 neck, but I guess this isn't the case? Not sure what to tell you about a PB4 neck.

For myself, I'm still going back and forth on this versus my Ibanez GWB35. I am liking the narrow string spacing of the Ibanez. But I still really like the PB5 as well. And the PB5 certainly has image in its favor, for the Nashville scene, lol. The GWB35 sounds great but I can't really say it looks the part in a blues band. ;) Not that I'm going to let that be the deciding factor.

I'm trying to decide if an extra $100 is worth it for only 0.04" more in neck thickness (I love my SB5001 neck so I imagine I would like the SB4000 neck). If I do that though, it voids the return policy, so that could be bad... but we'll see. Maybe I'll skip the bridge pickup, go for the thicker neck, and hope for the best.

Here are some Pictures of my Lefty PB5J, Albert at Carvin did all of the Electronic's and Set-up due to it Being the First Left Handed BP Bass. It Feels Great. More feed back to come after i spend some time playing it.

Haven't played a PB4, but I have a B40 and a SB neck on a Warmoth I built. Definite difference.

Best I can put it: the B40 neck is Jazz like. The SB neck is Precision like. So I don't know where the PB series falls between. That said, both are slim enough for me.

I think 'slim' is what he's worried about. He likes chunky necks.

I think the $100 upcharge 10-day-trial-period-voiding deal gets you a PB with an SB neck. Hmm. I'll have to give this some thought. I'll have to talk to Eddie at Carvin this week about options.

I've thought for a long time that it would be nice to have a bass with P and MM pickups (if the MM is in the sweet spot). You could get the sound of a P or the sound of a Stingray in the same bass.

Has anyone got one with this configuration yet? Is the MM pickup in the Stingray sweet spot?

If I remember my measurements correctly, a Musicman pickup in the sweet spot and a correctly positioned P pickup will overlap, so I don't think this one is in the sweet spot. I may be wrong though.

I agree with you though. That would combine my favorite two tones.

Okay, here's a short clip of the PB5 fretless. It's the intro to my composition 'Midnight with Mingus', a solo tribute to Mingus. Recorded on my iPhone, so the sound is a little thinner and treblier than it actually sounded in the room. Played straight into an Eden WT300 head and 2 x Carvin 112AG cabs. Wish it sounded exactly like it did in the room, but it came out not too awfully bad, for an iPhone recording.

Played the PB5 fretless at the All-Pro Blues Jam tonight in Hermitage with the Brian James Band and Tim Gonzalez, and it rocked. Lots of pro players there, and everyone loved the bass. Got lots of compliments on the tone, and on my intonation, which made me feel good. One guy said he always gets nervous when someone pulls out a fretless, but that I was spot on. :)

As an aside, Shaun Murphy was there (Little Feat, Bob Seger, Eric Clapton). She absolutely rocked the house. Possibly the best female vocalist I've ever heard. And she liked our band. :)

It's the stock Carvin roundwounds. Nothing special. They sound pretty good, better than I expected. I'll probably change them out at some point. Traditionally I've liked Thomastik Jazz Flats on fretlesses, but I'm enjoying the rounds so far on this bass. We'll see.
