New Carvin P bass, about time?

Well, the session went well. Just three tracks for an EP. Producer dug the bass and tone, and took my number for future reference. Always nice when that happens. I intentionally kept it ultra-simple to not get in the way of the piano. It'll be interesting to hear how it turns out when it's completed.

Did my second session with the fretless PB5 today. Piano, guitar, drums, two vocals and bass. Again, the producer (different one than the Thursday session) really dug the bass. He also raved about my time, which was nice to hear. That used to be my weakness. I was always pushing the beat, until an off the wall tip from Dennis Michaels (the now banned FretlessBoy) turned me around.
I'm liking this bass so much that I'm thinking strongly about using some debt to pick up a fretted version. Simple, black with tortoise shell pickguard, birdseye headstock, passive electronics, the low-wide frets so I can get the action really low (I play fretless so much that I'm really spoiled on low action). I concentrate so much on fretless though that I do hesitate a little to wrap $900 or so up in a fretted bass. Although it's a bargain for what you get. But I just wonder how much I would play it. I guess for sessions it would be good to have a nice fretted bass. I just sold my main fretted bass, a P, to Gretchen Wilson's bassist, leaving me with an Ibanez SR505 and an SX P copy as my only fretted basses.
I just don't know. I'm just a fretless guy. I once went 7 years owning only a single bass, a fretless Roscoe LG3005. Used it on countless gigs and several albums. But that was before moving to Nashville. Maybe having a fretted pseudo-P would be considered pretty necessary here!
I've been mostly in sell mode lately due to some financial issues. But I do have just enough credit left on a Carvin card to make this happen. Probably not wise. But I'm tempted.

Cool man, thanks! I'll re-record the whole tune on the new PB5 into something better than an iPhone sometime soon. The second and third verses are quotes from Mingus tunes, Goodbye Porkpie Hat and Haitian Fight song respectively. There's one section of the tune that's difficult on the PB5, because it went up to the 24th 'fret' G on the Roscoe. I'm having to replace it with harmonics.
I have a live recording of it on a Roscoe LG3005 into an Eden DC112XLT / D112XLT stack, so we can compare how the $900 PB5 stacks up against the $3300 Roscoe.
The PB5 still has the stock Carvin roundwounds on it. The Roscoe had Thomastik Jazz Flats. Still trying to decide if I want to go that route with the PB5. They've traditionally been my favorite fretless strings, but I am also liking the tone of the rounds that are on there. We'll see.

Wait, a comment by a now-banned TB'er changed the way you play the bass and you don't mention the tip? C'mon! That's the single most interesting nugget I've heard on here in weeks! Spill it!
It was a few years ago, back when Dennis and I were both Genz Benz endorsers. We spoke by phone once a week or so, and I was just struggling with my longstanding tendency to rush the beat. I had actually gotten fired off a session on what was to go on to become a Grammy-nominated album because of it. Dennis is an awesome teacher and player and I reached out to him for help.
His advice? Get one of those old fashioned wind-up ticking alarm clocks and sleep with it beside your head. He claimed that the constant, in-time ticking serves to establish an internal clock that you will automatically reference when playing. I gave it a try, and within a week my time was much better. I was really locking with the drummer. No more pushing the beat.
I only slept with that clock for a few weeks. It worked. My time used to be a weakness, but is now a strength. I'm so much more in the pocket now. I just sent Dennis another thank you note for this.

I like my BX500 with the PB5 quite a bit. Also enjoying the Eden WT300 I recently took in trade, and my Ashdown Mag300. The GK 700RB is getting the effects loops jacks replaced, as they finally got so corroded that no amount of deoxit cleaned them up, so I haven't been able to try that amp with the bass yet. So far mine sounds great through everything. Played it through a backline Ampeg PF500 and Henry the 8x8 the other night and sounded fine through that as well.

A guy here in Nashville, Bryan Scott, does cool custom mods under the business name Yarah Customs. We're doing a barter deal for him to do a dark chocolate burl walnut pickguard for my PB5. Here's a sample of his work. He did the pickguard, matching headstock veneer, built the custom bridge, and the tuning peg heads:

I just Picked up Carvin's B2000 Head and a BRX 15.3 and The BRX 10.2 We will see how that set up plays out this weekend. For some reason I just wanted more Power. I tried them out before my Purchase.
I would like to hear a PB in a fretless version with flats. Any sound clips out there we know of along this line?
We could start a whole useless thread about the difference between P/J setups and other pickup configurations and throw a bunch of pseudo-technical garbage around with no ultimate purpose.
I thought that was the default setting!
I'm thinking strongly of throwing Thomastik Jazz Flats on mine. I'll post up if I do.
